About the Job
Under the supervision of the ESC Coordinator, the Outdoor Programs Instructor is responsible for maintaining and operating Earth Service Corps (ESC), an outdoor education and service learning program for elementary and middle school youth at multiple school sites. The Outdoor Programs Instructor will also assist with outreach and culminating program events, such as overnight camping trips. Ideal candidates
will support the Director and Coordinator in other departmental out of school time programs, including school vacation break camps. All programs should be administered in a manner consistent with YMCA goals and policies. ESC’s mission is to empower youth to become effective, responsible global citizens by providing opportunities for leadership development, environmental education & action and cross-cultural awareness.
The Presidio Community YMCA has been providing youth with outdoor education and leadership programming since 2004. We serve elementary and middle school aged youth, and over 60% of our youth qualify for free or reduced lunch. ESC works to get urban youth outdoors, setting the foundations for building tomorrow's environmental activists, and build bridges of understanding among youth from different San Francisco neighborhoods. This position is 20 hrs/wk. Must be available to work at least 3 consistent days per week during after school times (usually 2:30-6:30 p.m) throughout the entire course of a school year. Hours may vary slightly in accordance with the SFUSD calendar, program needs, and the needs of Camp & Outdoor Programs Director and Coordinator. Opportunity to obtain Class B license may be available.
- Minimum of 18 years of age required.
- High school graduation or equivalent required.
- Must be flexible to accommodate varied schedule for programs
- Excellent verbal, visual, and written communication skills.
- At least one year previous experience running enrichment activities with groups of youth, and knowledge of a variety of behavior management techniques is preferred.
- Ability to organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
- Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
- CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
