Literacy is Wellness

Literacy is defined as the ability to read and write- but it is so much more. Low literacy is connected to poor health, poverty, crime, and increased unemployment, while higher levels of literacy are connected to promotion of democracy, enhancement of cultural diversity, as well as increased self-esteem, confidence, and empowerment. Literacy is more than reading and writing, literacy is wellness.

In order to meet our strategic vision-that the healthiest children in America will live in the Bay Area, building the skills and habits for a healthy life, being empowered to reach their highest potential,- we must consider literacy as an essential skill for wellness. Studies show that in the first three years of life, infants and toddlers already begin to acquire the first of thousands of words they will use throughout their lives, and the single most significant factor influencing a child’s early educational success is an introduction to books and being read to at home prior to beginning school.

Programs that support our Academic Success Initiative- like our after school programs, Power Scholars Academy, preschool and early learning facilities, and Awesome Readers Camp all support literacy as wellness for our young people. There are many ways you can get involved at home too!

1: Remember that reading is for more than books!

Practice reading menus, movie names, road signs, game instructions and more to show your child that reading is everywhere.

2: Visit your local library

Letting children pick out books that catch their attention will encourage reading as a fun activity

3: Read Each Night

Making reading a part of your child’s night-time routine helps them to associate reading with relaxation.

4: Celebrate Read Across America Day on March 2

Join us at the Presidio Y for a read-a-thon from 1-3pm in our Ykids space
