Excellence in Teaching: Mission YMCA
On Thursday, May 11, First 5 San Francisco honored teachers at their 4th annual Excellence in Teaching awards dinner to raise the attention given to teachers in the field of early childhood education. Each year the award honors teachers who have made outstanding contributions to the classroom and partnered with families to promote child well-being. First 5 San Francisco is committed to support young children and their families from prenatal to five years of age through abundant opportunities to be healthy, learn, and grow.
Our very own Mission YMCA preschool teachers Lorena Zegarra and Argentina Bonilla were honored for their work with STEM education.
“I love what I do because teaching today is amazing,” says Argentina Bonilla.
“From the beginning of the year to now, there has been this huge change. And I’m not talking about academically. I’m also talking about their social and emotional development and their way of being independent. They’re able to think for themselves and they’re able to express what they feel, what they like and what they don’t. That is my most grateful moment [as a teacher],” says Lorena Zegarra.
