Gift of Securities
Gifting stock or mutual funds is a wonderful way to support the Y and bypass capital gains taxes. A gift of stock (or other appreciated property) entitles you to a market value tax deduction and if the stock has been held for more than one year, capital gains tax may be avoided on any appreciation by donating the stock prior to sale. The Y benefits by selling the stock without paying taxes on the gain, and you benefit from making a contribution that would be larger than what you might have been able to donate in cash.
For stock held in brokerage accounts, your broker can assist you in making a gift of stock through a direct transfer to the YMCA of San Francisco.
