Hike to San Francisco's Mount Davidson
Saturday, December 8 at 9:30am
At 938 feet, Mt. Davidson is the highest point in San Francisco. It is an urban forest where a myriad of trails traverse densely overgrown vegetation. The diversity of vegetation provides habitat for a wide range of migratory and resident birds, including 18 locally sensitive species. Owls and hawks nest in and hunt from Mount Davidson’s blue gum eucalyptus. Our 5-mile hike will also include the adjacent neighborhood of Saint Francis Wood.
Hike to Pulgas Ridge Open Space Preserve
Saturday, January 5 at 10:00am
Work off those holiday calories with a hike! Make good on that new year’s resolution to exercise more.
This hike is about 5 miles long and should take us approximately 2.5 hours. The trail ascends an oak-covered hillside to the top of the Preserve, where vegetation changes to chaparral. We will climb along Dusky-footed Woodrat Trail to the highest portion of the park and enjoy outstanding views of the Bay Area before completing our loop hike. Meet us at the Cordilleras Trailhead.
Hike to Mori Point
Saturday, February 2 at 10:00am
This 6-mile hike is flat at the start but then climbs with lots of ups and downs. If you use hiking poles, this would be a good pace to bring them. We begin hiking from the Pacifica Pier along the coast passing by Sharp Park Golf Course on our way to Mori Point. We hike out to where Harold drove his Jaguar off the cliff in the cult movie Harold and Maude.
On clear days this hike offers stunning ocean views north to Point Reyes, south to Pedro Point and west to the Farallon Islands. We continue up and then down (here is where you can use your poles) on a challenging descent on our way to Rockaway Beach. If we feel like it, we may have a cup of coffee here before returning to our starting point. Meet us at Pacifica Pier.
Hike to La Honda Creek Preserve
Saturday, March 2 at 9:30am
This is a 6-mile hike with the possibility of a 3-mile extension. We will get a great workout as we make steep climbs along the way. This scenic 6,142-acre expanse in rural San Mateo County was originally part of a Mexican land grant called Rancho San Gregorio. In the 1860s it became a hideout for members of the Jesse James gang. It was, and still is today, a working cattle ranch where cattle graze along the trail.
With rolling hills, grasslands, redwoods and the Pacific Ocean in the distance, the views are stunning! Meet us at in the parking lot at La Honda Creek Preserve. There are only 19 parking places, so please try to carpool.
SPECIAL: Hike to Four Skyline Open Space Preserves
Saturday, April 13 at 9:30am
See four preserves in one hike! We will be hiking through four different regional open space districts. This 6-mile trail has lots of twists and turns, and will be moderately difficult. Wildflowers are often abundant here in spring, raptors soar over the grasslands and coyotes patrol the ridges. The Horseshoe Lake overlook has two oak-shaded picnic tables, and Alpine Pond has two sunny tables adjacent to the pond. Bring your lunch for a picnic after the hike. Meet us at the Skyline Ridge Preserve Parking Lot.
