Take A Hike

Join hiking leader Larry as he takes you on refreshing morning hikes through the beautiful scenery of different Bay Area trails. Each month, we'll venture to a different trail for fresh air and exercise. Family and youth hikes are also offered each month! Bring the little ones along as we take in views and spot local wildlife.

Some hikes require pre-registration. Please see the front desk for current hike offerings.

Don't Forget: Pack a windbreaker, water, snacks, and please wear comfortable shoes.

Upcoming Hikes

El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve
Saturday, July 14 at 10am

This 5.5 mile loop hike through a second growth redwood forest should take 3 hours with an elevation gain of 500 feet. Along Resolution Trail we will see wreckage from the October 1953 crash of The Resolution, an Australian DC-6 commercial airliner and a memorial to the memory of its passengers and crew. We will also visit a tafoni formation, large sandstone boulders naturally eroded over thousands of years to create small, shallow caves in the rock and a lacy “fretwork” resembling a stone honeycomb.

Butano State Park
Saturday, August 18 at 10am

This hike has it all: a forest of redwood Douglas fir trees, a coastal grassland & an alder woodland. Beautiful! This is a 6.5 mile hike with considerable change in elevation—both up and down hill and an excellent workout. If you use hiking sticks or are thinking about getting some, you will find them useful here. Feel free to join hike leader Larry at his nearby cabin after the hike.

Lands End, Golden Gate Recreation Area
Saturday, September 8 at 10am

Famous for views of the Pacific Ocean, the Marin Headlands and the Golden Gate Strait, we will hike the Lands End coastal trail from the ruins of Sutro Baths to Sea Cliff and on to China Beach. This trail is the path of a former train line built expressly to bring swimmers to the Sutro Baths in the late 1900s.
This hike is about 5 miles and will take 2.5 hours—finishing up in time for lunch. After the hike, why not enjoy more views of the Pacific Ocean with lunch at Louie’s or the Cliff House nearby?

The Peninsula Watershed above San Andreas, Crystal Springs & Pilarcitos Reservoirs
Saturday, October 27 at 8:45am

This is a 13 mile hike and the longest one that the YMCA has ever offered. You must be a strong hiker for this hike. There are great views and this is a rare opportunity to visit a place normally closed to the public. Registration will be required and limited to 20 hikers max. Check back later for registration information.
