Swim Sessions 2020

Session 1: January 6- February 2

Infant & Toddler Lessons (Ages 6 months-3 years)

Infant & Toddler Lessons (Ages 6 months-3 years)

The Swim Starter (Parent-Child) stages are designed for parents to help guide their children in learning aquatics skills and feeling comfortable in the water. Classes are 30 minutes each.

Stage A: Water Discovery

Stage A introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment through exploration and encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water.

Stage B: Water Exploration

In stage B, children explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.

Preschool Group Swim Lessons (Ages 3-5 years)

The Preschool stages are designed for developing comfort with underwater exploration and water safety. These stages lay down the foundation for a student's future progress in swimming. Classes are 30 minutes each. See top of page for dates. 

Stage 1-2: Water Acclimation

Students will develop comfort with underwater exploration and focus on body position, control, directional change, and forward movement in the water while practicing how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water.

Stage 3-4: Water Stamina

Students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in the previous stage. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action. Water safety is reinforced by practicing how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water.

Youth Group Swim Lessons (Ages 6-13 years)

Our youth swim lesson stages help youth who want to learn a life skill by increasing their knowledge, ability, and stamina to build smart, strong swimmers and confident kids. Water safety will be reinforced throughout each stage. Classes are 30-40 minutes each depending on the stage level. See top of page for dates. 

Stage 1-2: Water Acclimation

Stage 4: Stroke Introduction 

Students in stage 4 develop stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl, and learn the breaststroke kick and butterfly kick. Water safety is reinforced through treading water and elementary backstroke. Classes are 30 minutes each.

Stage 5: Stroke Development

Students will work on stroke technique and learn all major competitive strokes. The emphasis on water safety continues through treading water and sidestroke. Classes are 40 minutes each.

Stage 6: Stroke Mechanics

Students refine stroke technique on all major competitive strokes, learn about competitive swimming, and discover how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle. Classes are 40 minutes each.

Adult Group Swim Lessons (Ages 13+ years)

It is never too late to learn! With over 110 years of experience teaching people to swim, the Y is here to help you learn water safety and basic swim skills. Our swim lessons help adults want to learn a life skill by increasing their knowledge, ability, and stamina to build smart, strong swimmers. Classes are 30 minutes each.

Beginner

This class is for adults who cannot swim and who don’t feel at ease in the water. Adults will be taught basic swimming water safety skills. Skills taught are based on class needs. Class ratio is 1:8. Classes are Saturdays from 12:35-1:15pm.

Intermediate

This level is for adults who are comfortable in the water, and who can swim (even if only for short distances). Swimmers will work on stroke development and endurance. Skills taught are based on class needs. Class ratio is 1:8. Classes are Saturdays from 1:20-2:00pm.

Private Swim Lessons

Private swim lessons are designed to provide personal instruction and help to improve stroke technique, enhance ability, and improve endurance and strength for both children and adults. Children must be at least 3 years old to take private or semi-private lessons. Lessons are 30 minutes each.

Lessons are 30 minutes each, and are taught 1-on-1. Packages are sold in 2, 4, or 6 lessons.*
Facility Member: $88 (2 lessons), $168 (4 lessons), $240 (6 lessons)
Community Participant: $124 (2 lessons), $240 (4 lessons), $348 (6 lessons)

Semi-Private Swim Lessons

Lessons are 30 minutes each, and are taught 2 swimmers to 1 instructor. Participants must find their own partner for semi-private lessons. Packages are sold in 2, 4, or 6 lessons*.
Facility Member: $68 (2 lessons), $128 (4 lessons), $180 (6 lessons)
Community Participant: $88 (2 lessons), $168 (4 lessons), $240 (6 lessons)

Youth Swim Team

Looking for a year-round non-competitive swimming experience? Our youth pre-swim team and swim team is for swimmers 7-16 years old. We offer swimmers of many levels a positive, healthy environment to grow and learn. Participants must be approved by swim coach prior to entry. Fees do apply.

Pre Team:

Practice on Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 4:30-5:45pm and Saturday 10:30-11:45am

Swim Team:

Masters Swim Team

Want to better your techniques in the water? Build your strength and endurance in the water with our Master Swim Classes! A Masters coach will provide speed and endurance training, motivation, drills, fix your stroke techniques, and fun workouts. Prerequisites include knowledge of 3 out of 4 competitive strokes, ability to swim 2000 yards in an hour, and prepared to do a variety of workouts including short and long sets, kicking sets, pull sets, drill sets, sprints, etc.

Aqua Fitness: Group Exercise

All fitness levels are welcome to attend any of our Aqua Fitness classes, and our instructors will be happy to demonstrate modifications. Unless otherwise noted, the minimum age to participate in Group Exercise classes is 12 years of age, with parental supervision. Youth ages 14+ years may participate alone. A valid Facility Membership is required to participate in these classes.

Aqua Arthritis: A slower-paced water fitness class developed between the Arthritis Foundation and the YMCA to provide specialized exercises. This class can help ease the signs and symptoms of arthritis, strengthen muscles and help protect joints from further damage.

Aqua Basic Strength: Water is a strength-training format suitable for everyone. This class utilizes the resistance properties of water to strengthen the core, upper and lower body; as well as providing cardiovascular conditioning. 

Aqua Adaptive Strength: Same foundations as our Aqua Basic Strength. More modifications offered and extra focus on range of motion and strength.

Aqua Advanced Strength: Same foundations of our Aqua Basic Strength, but at a more vigorous pace.

Kate Henninger

Kate has been working in Aquatics since she was 16 years old. She grew up in a small town in Washington and now loves living in the Bay Area. Her passion in life is to ensure that everyone, no matter their age, can enjoy the water and be safe while swimming.

Ashley Jones

Ashley was born and raised in San Mateo, she began working at the Peninsula Family YMCA in 2012 as a lifeguard/swim instructor and feels passionate about accessible swim lessons for all. Ashley enjoys the beach, traveling, music festivals and Disney!
