Heat of the Kitchen is a program run out of Ida B. Wells that focuses on culinary arts and job readiness for high school students. Alice Cravens, the Site Coordinator, says, “Cooking together creates more than what ends up on our plates. It creates life-changing opportunities, whether or not a student wants to be a chef. Realizing your attributes as you work using all your senses is powerful, lasting long after the dishes are done.”
Heat of the Kitchen is in its 7th year thanks to Buchanan YMCA, the Department of Children, Youth and Their Families, and SFUSD. You can learn more about the program at www.heatofthekitchen.org.

This 3-week program centered on leadership, personal growth, and future exploration. Participants build skills in communication, facilitation, teamwork, conflict management, and social-emotional learning while developing confidence and a stronger sense of self. They also explore their own goals, interests, and possible pathways through activities focused on future planning, college and career exploration, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy.
Each week includes a mix of guided workshops, community building, reflection, and hands-on application. Participants support elementary day camp as one component of the program, using that setting to practice and apply their developing leadership skills in a real-world environment with ongoing coaching and feedback.
Designed for rising 7th–9th graders who are ready to grow their confidence, build meaningful skills, and begin thinking more intentionally about their future.
This AAU Basketball Program consists of 5 summer competitive weekend tournaments with 2 games per day, along with two practices per week. Players will develop basketball skills needed to compete at a higher level while also learning teamwork, discipline, commitment, and what it takes to be part of a team environment.
