Truancy is not just a School District Problem!

As a Community, we must remain cognizant of the reality that if our youth do not show up in our classrooms, the odds are increased of them showing up in our Juvenile Halls, Prisons, and Funeral Homes.

At the Bayview Hunters Point YMCA where we stand for, youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, we believe it takes the efforts of the entire community, working together diligently and collaboratively, to accomplish this mission.

The Bayview Hunters Point YMCA’s CARE Program is planning our 9th Annual Merchant Walk to continue our outreach effort of broadening the awareness of local merchants on the effects of truancy in our community and to fortify them as Community Stakeholders in our constant struggle against it.

This year our Merchant Walk will be led by graduates from the CARE program that have come full circle to become viable assets to their families and their communities, and current student participants from the Center for Academic Re-entry and Empowerment Program (CARE).

Event Details

Date: 11/19/19

Time: 10:00 am-12:00 pm

Meeting Place: Bayview Hunters Point YMCA 1601 Lane Street, SF, CA 94124

Event Goals

The Merchant Walk is designed to accomplish the following:

Outreach

Serve as an outreach strategy that provides a tool for informing, engaging, and empowering local businesses by giving them the necessary information to address immediate concerns. Ultimately, we aim to connect these local merchants to the Center for Academic Re-entry and Empowerment Program where they can take on supportive roles in serving youth and their families.

Awareness

To increase community awareness of the importance of daily classroom attendance and education.

Engage

To engage local merchants toward promoting education within the community by not allowing students to patronize their businesses during school hours

Promote

Promote the message of “There’s A Graduate Inside of You!"

Educate

To distribute marketing material – information cards, marketing posters, decals, and brochures (which provide the contact information for the CARE program) – to merchants so they can post it in their establishments and share the information with their customers

Please come out and support our event on Tuesday, November 19, 2019 from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm. We are convinced that our collaborative outreach efforts will continue to demonstrate our commitment that the Bayview Community is taking a stand to say “No” to truancy and “Yes” to Education.
