Stretching Themselves to Learn and Grow

By wpdev

During this season of giving and gratitude, we have so much to be thankful for at the Y!

As the YMCA of San Francisco’s new Senior Director of Achievement Gap and Curriculum, I am especially thankful for the success of our Power Scholars Academy students this summer. While most youth experience 2 months of summer learning loss, our scholars maintained their reading skills and on average experienced an average of one and a half month gain in math knowledge.

Over the course of six weeks this summer, 725  scholars stretched themselves to learn and grow. Here are some of the highlights:

  • 83% of teachers said scholars exhibited growth mindset
  • 80% of parents reported their child having a more positive attitude about school
  • 86% of parents became more involved in their child’s education

I’m already looking forward to 2019 where with the help of our partners such as San Francisco’s Department of Children Youth & Their Families, Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA), Alaska Airlines and many more, we will work with even more youth throughout the Bay Area will be able to find their genius within with support from Power Scholars Academy!
