Y Kids Guest Judges at Lucasfilm Event

Representatives from top Bay Area tech companies including Facebook, Oculus, Instagram, Fitbit, Twitter, and Lucasfilm constructed littleBits droids that were entered into a 'droid building competition' on December 15. Lucasfilms asked the future creativity leaders (kids!) to be the judges of the adult's droids sharing their perspective and ultimately their vote on winners.

The event, held at the Lucasfilm Campus in the Presidio, was focused on generating interest in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) education for the next generation of innovative thinkers.

Youthful Enthusiasm

“Thank you all for the opportunity for Nathan to attend the Droidathon event today at LucasFilm campus. Nathan had a great time tonight and couldn't wait to start on his LittleBits DROID project."

-Fred Fermin, father of Nathan Fermin, a student at New Traditions enrolled in the Buchanan YMCA after school program.

Changing the World

When asked by the littleBits competition announcer what question she would ask the Droid developers about their creations, Emma from the YMCA Sutro afterschool STEAM Academy program at the Presidio Community YMCA replied,

“What will your droid do to make the community better?"

Great question, Emma! At the end of the event, Lucasfilm gave each child a littleBits Droid Inventor kit of their own. Perhaps these kids will develop a droid in the future that will in fact enhance their communities.
