At the Y, we believe sports are about more than just the score; we’re dedicated to helping youth develop skills, sportsmanship, and self-esteem in a supportive and inclusive environment.

FAQs – Youth Basketball League

Our league is recreational and beginner-friendly for the youth of our community. We focus on fundamental skill development, sportsmanship, and the YMCA’s core values of honesty, respect, caring, and responsibility. Our goal for YMCA basketball players is to help them develop healthy and active lives.

No, but you’ll need to create a free account to register online. You can check the status of your account/membership or create one here:

The ideal team size is 8-11 players; a minimum of 7 is required, and a maximum of 12. Since 5 players from a team are on the court at any given time, when it comes to substitutions and distributing playing time, 10-player teams are the simplest way to rotate players in and out evenly and fairly.

Ultimately, it is up to the coach to determine how many players they feel comfortable having on the team. We remind and encourage our coaches to have an “everyone plays” mentality with the youth of our league, so it is the responsibility of the coach to distribute playing time fairly. Most coaches who allowed more than 10 players found player rotations challenging when all players were present.

The Stonestown Family YMCA is committed to ensuring that every child who wants to participate in this league can do so. If a child does not have a team to play on, they will sign up as a free agent and be placed on an existing team. Please make sure to say yes when asked if you are signing up as a free agent in the activity custom questions.

The Y believes in providing accessible physical activity for youth in our community. Volunteer coaches are an essential part of making our program affordable and inclusive. Each team should provide its own volunteer coach. Most coaches are a player’s parent, relative, or family friend. Teams can have as many volunteer coaches as they see fit. Volunteer coaches must complete a background check and YMCA mandatory volunteer training,

If a team is without a volunteer coach, a Y Staff member will be provided to coach the team!

You are welcome to give your volunteer coach a non-monetary gift in appreciation of their effort and hard work during the season. Coaches who charge a fee for coaching or accept monetary gifts are in violation of YMCA policies.

Before the start of the season, teams will be given slotted practice times. The practice location is our Stonestown Family YMCA facility (333 Eucalyptus Drive). Practices will take place on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM.

Each team will practice once a week for 1 hour. Top practice schedule choices will be accommodated as much as possible, but may be subject to change based on space availability and schedule flexibility.

Teams will be assigned a full court of our gym for practice. Depending on the team’s grade, hoops with adjustable heights will be provided. Appropriately sized basketballs will be provided.

Games will be played at The Stonestown YMCA Basketball Gym (333 Eucalyptus Ave).

Yes, during basketball season, the Stonestown Family YMCA employs gym monitors during practices and referees during games.

Gym Monitors’ responsibilities are setting up the courts for practices, providing equipment to teams, and most importantly ensuring a safe environment for teams. Our friendly Gym Monitors can be approached for assistance during practices.

Referees’ duties are to facilitate smooth game flow and help teach the players the basics of competitive basketball. Age-appropriate YMCA basketball rules will be enforced. Open and respectful dialogue with the referees and scorekeepers is welcome.

There will not be any scorekeeping for Kindergarten and 1st-grade games. The goal of K-1st games is purely recreational and to introduce the basics of competitive basketball.

In the 2nd-, 3rd-, 4th-, and 5th-grade divisions, the scoreboards will be used during games. Standings will also be kept, and a playoff will take place in the final 2 weeks of the season, with a champion being crowned! Remember, the competition is always meant to be fun and friendly!

Player-to-Player Defense is enforced. In Kindergarten and 1st-grade games, players will wear color-coded wristbands to indicate which opposing player they are defending.

2nd and 3rd graders will not wear wristbands, but player-to-player defense is still enforced. Full-court press defenses are never allowed during K-3rd games.

In 4th and 5th grade games, teams may deploy Zone Defenses, and full court presses are allowed the final 2 minutes of the 3rd and 4th quarter.

Please inform the Youth Sports Coordinator, Sam Bowman, [email protected], as early as possible to notify them of any game(s) your team has to miss. During the season, the deadline to notify of forfeits shall be Wednesday prior to weekend games.

We may be able to reschedule games or offer double headers on another weekend, but there is no guarantee that space and time will be available. We will, however, do our best to reschedule games and exhaust all available opportunities.

It’s only a forfeit if the entire team is absent. In the event of a player shortage, the two teams may coordinate a 4-on-4 game, or the team with more players may “lend” players to the other team.

Comfortable, flexible clothing and athletic footwear. Clothing such as jeans, skirts, dresses, and sandals is not advised. The Stonestown Family YMCA will provide jerseys for players to keep and wear in practices and games for the season.

Our reversible jerseys come in youth sizes (extra small, small, medium, and large) and adult sizes (small and medium). You will be able to select your child’s preferred jersey size at registration.

Sizes can be exchanged during the season, subject to availability.

We certainly encourage healthy eating along with physical activity. However, we ask that all food and beverages be kept off our basketball courts during practices and games.

Please make sure that any trash is put in the proper receptacles and not left in our basketball gyms.

Only water in resealable containers should be brought into our basketball gyms. Please do your part to avoid spills, as the risk of injury increases with puddles on the courts!

You can contact Youth Sports Coordinator, Sam Bowman, [email protected], with any questions or concerns.

Youth 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament

SUMMER 2026

The Stonestown Family YMCA is excited to announce that we will host a Youth 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament this June. This tournament will be co-ed in the 8-9 and 10-11 year-old divisions; the 12-13 year-olds will be separated into single-division boys’ and girls’ divisions. Participants are permitted to play up or down an age division so long as their birthday is within 3 months of the age cutoff.

Players must enroll with 2 other participants listed on their team. You do this by listing the other players on your child’s team while filling out the custom questions. Participants who sign up without 2 other teammates will be put on the waitlist and will not be guaranteed a spot in the tournament.

There is a maximum of 16 teams (or 48 players) per age/gender division. The tournament will take place over 2 Saturdays, June 13th and June 20th.  The first weekend will be a round-robin style group stage, where each team will play the 3 other teams in their group. After each group has played 3 games, the top 2 teams in each group advance to the championship bracket, while the bottom 2 teams advance to the consolation bracket. The second weekend will consist of 2 games for each team, a semi-final, and a final/consolation game. All games will be played half-court style, winner takes out, playing to 21 by 2-point increments. Each game will have a YMCA staff member assigned to referee.

More in-depth game rules and tournament format will be released leading up to the start of the tournament. Please refer to your child’s age-specific sign-up link for game times!
