History of the Golf Tournament and Crab Feed

In 1971, the ARO community service group began sponsoring golf tournaments in memory of one of their members, Nelson Leong, as a fundraiser for youth services. In 1984, the ARO hosted a series of crab feeds in memory of another member, Rolph Chin. The goal was to raise $50,000 over 5 years for the Rolph Chin Camp and Conference Fund. They reached their goal in four years and the event was very popular and successful.

In 1991, the ARO decided to combine the Golf Tournament and Crab Feed events into one, thus creating the event as we know it today. This event raises funds to support vital services that the Chinatown YMCA provides for the community. Not only is it a fundraiser, but it brings friends of the Y together to have fun and enjoy the fellowship.

This year, the Golf Tournament and Crab Feed are in memory of Hanley T.D. Fong, a dedicated ARO member, Board of Managers member, Golf Tournament and Crab Feed committee member, donor, advocate, and friend of the Chinatown Y.

About the ARO

Since 1950, the impact of the ARO’s dedication has rippled through all of our programs and services. The ARO led the branch’s capital renovation project and laid the foundation for a successful major campaign to update and innovate our space and programming. Their storied legacy includes highlighting the importance of keeping the Y’s mission of service to youth and community at the core of every decision we make, every program we provide, and every interaction we have with our members. We are grateful for their unwavering support and leadership, including thousands of hours committed in volunteer service and generous philanthropic investments in our branch.
