With Deep Gratitude
Today, I am humbled to announce that the YMCA of San Francisco has received an anchor gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. The YMCA of San Francisco is proud to join several other non-profits nationwide that Ms. Scott has chosen because of their transformative work, including a selection of other YMCA’s.
In her announcement of the gifts, Ms. Scott said she sought to support “people suffering the economic effects of the [COVID-19] crisis” and targeted organizations “operating in communities facing high projected food insecurity, high measures of racial inequity, high local poverty rates.”
When COVID-19 hit, the YMCA of San Francisco transformed to ensure the Y was there when our communities needed us most. We provided emergency childcare to essential workers, expanded food pantry services, offered virtual health and wellness classes, and deepened the reach of social services that support our most vulnerable populations.
The past nine months have shown me the incredible strength and determination of our communities – the people who wake up every day and choose to support their family and neighbors who are struggling in the face of the pandemic, economic recession and the fight for social justice. This investment in our programs allows us to continue to scale our COVID-19 response programming for those who need us most. It also stabilizes the Y’s future and positions us to continue to respond to community need with hope, innovation and purpose.
We would not be able to deliver these critical services during this most challenging year without the support of our donors, volunteers and community partners. There remain vast and persistent needs in Marin, San Mateo and San Francisco counties. Together, we will help deliver the recovery that all communities deserve.
In Community,
Jamie Bruning-Miles
