Position Summary
The Personal Trainer is responsible for providing a supportive and inclusive experience for all members. Under the direction of the Director of Healthy Living and as part of the YMCA Health & Wellness team, the Personal Trainer works closely with members to offer personalized guidance, motivation, and accommodations tailored to their health and wellness goals. Services are delivered through one-on-one, semi-private, or small group sessions.
The Personal Trainer develops customized exercise plans to meet the unique needs and fitness levels of each member, ensuring a variety of accessible and inclusive options. They conduct consultations, engage with members in a welcoming and respectful manner, and maintain a clean, safe environment that promotes health and well-being. By adhering to established exercise science principles and delivering exceptional customer service, the Personal Trainer fosters a positive, empowering, and equitable experience for all participants.
Job Responsibilities
Personalized Training & Program Development
- Design and deliver safe, effective workouts tailored to individual, buddy, or small group training needs.
- Collect and document relevant health information (e.g., PAR-Q, medical history) for each client.
- Collaborate with clients to identify and set achievable goals.
- Develop personalized exercise programs based on client goals, medical history, and physical assessments.
- Align training sessions with clients’ specific goals to deliver measurable results.
- Apply current fitness science and industry trends to enhance training programs.
Client Engagement & Member Support
- Build client relationships during operational shifts and through engagement with the YMCA membership community.
- Promote YMCA wellness programs and services by sharing accurate, relevant information with members.
- Encourage confidence and engagement in YMCA wellness programs by creating a welcoming, supportive environment for all participants.
- Demonstrate familiarity with YMCA member resources, communications, schedules, and support offerings to provide accurate and helpful information.
Progress Tracking & Documentation
- Monitor and document clients’ progress in an organized and professional manner.
- Utilize designated software systems to schedule and maintain accurate session records and client notes.
- Respond promptly to client inquiries (within 24 hours) and internal communications (within 48 hours) while maintaining regular contact with supervisors.
Professionalism & Compliance
- Adhere to all professional, ethical, and YMCA guidelines, ensuring compliance with certification requirements and organizational policies.
- Maintain up-to-date fitness certifications by completing ongoing professional development, including classes, seminars, workshops, and exams.
Facility & Safety Management
- Ensure a safe, clean, and inclusive environment by understanding and communicating YMCA cleaning protocols, safety rules, and operational systems.
- Foster positive, professional relationships with clients, members, and staff to create a supportive environment.
Program Growth & Development
- Support the development and implementation of new programs and activities to meet client needs and attract prospective clients.
- Manage an appropriate client load in collaboration with supervisors to ensure consistent, high-quality service.
Qualifications
- Maintain a flexible schedule, with availability on weekdays, evenings, and weekends, committing to a minimum of 10 hours per week during branch operating hours.
- Deliver exceptional customer service through strong written and verbal communication, active listening, and the ability to effectively instruct and observe participants.
- Apply extensive knowledge of exercise techniques, including proper use of strength and cardiovascular equipment.
- Possess a nationally recognized Personal Training Certification (e.g., NASM, NSCA, ACSM, CSCS, NASF, ISSA, NFPT, or ACE preferred).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin or other languages.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
The Personal Trainer works primarily in a fitness facility, providing individual, semi-private, and small group training sessions. The environment consists of indoor spaces equipped with fitness equipment, and trainers may also assist in outdoor fitness activities when applicable.
The role requires physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, and demonstrating exercises. Trainers should be able to assist clients with exercises, use fitness equipment, and occasionally adjust equipment as needed. The trainer will need to demonstrate exercises with proper form and provide guidance to ensure safe practice. The position involves lifting weights and equipment up to 75 lbs and occasionally assisting in moving or adjusting larger equipment. Trainers will interact with multiple clients and manage sessions in a dynamic, fast-paced setting. The role also requires maintaining a positive, supportive, and professional demeanor while accommodating clients’ needs and adjusting to varying circumstances.
