Position Summary
The On-Call Y-Kids Program Leader supports the goals and mission of the YMCA by
providing engaging, age-appropriate programming for children ranging from 12 weeks to 10
years old. This role focuses on creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where
children can explore, learn, and participate in creative and interactive activities.
The On-Call Program Leader is responsible for maintaining a safe and clean space, fostering
positive relationships with children, families, and branch members. Key responsibilities
include planning and facilitating daily activities, promoting a sense of belonging, and
ensuring the overall well-being of participants in alignment with YMCA values and program
standards.
This on-call role provides flexible coverage for Y-Kids programming, including staff
absences, schedule gaps, special events, and high-demand periods. On-call staff may be
scheduled based on program needs and staff availability.
Job Responsibilities
Professional Conduct & Relationships
- Welcome children and families upon arrival and foster a friendly, inclusive
atmosphere. - Provide new and prospective participants with accurate information about the Y-Kids
Program and other youth offerings. - Support an environment that is equitable and inclusive for all children.
- Follow supervisor guidance and respond to feedback in a professional and
collaborative manner. - Model YMCA core values—caring, respect, honesty, and responsibility—in interactions
with participants, families, volunteers, and team members.
Program & Childcare Responsibilities
- Prepare and clean the program space before and after use, ensuring materials are
stored properly and the environment remains safe. - Follow established check-in and check-out procedures to support child safety
protocols. - Encourage shared snack time to promote healthy habits and a sense of community,
in alignment with YMCA HEPA standards. - Provide age-appropriate support with restroom needs; diapering may be required at
designated locations. - Communicate with parents or guardians during pick-up and share relevant updates
as needed.
Organizational Participation & Compliance
- Take part in site, department, branch, and association-wide events as appropriate.
- Adhere to YMCA policies related to safety, supervision, mandated reporting, and risk
management. - Complete additional tasks or responsibilities as directed by the supervisor.
- Follow established procedures to document and report incidents in a timely and
accurate manner.
Qualifications
- Minimum age of 16.
- Availability to accept on-call shifts during mornings, afternoons, evenings,
and/or weekends based on program needs. - Prior experience working with youth is beneficial but not required.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrates sound judgment, adaptability, and creativity.
- Effective communication, interpersonal, and service-oriented skills.
- Willingness to complete all required training and certifications—such as CPR/AED,
Child Abuse Prevention, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens—within 30 days
of hire. - Candidates 18 and older must successfully complete a fingerprint-based
background check; those under 18 must provide a valid work permit.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual skills in Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, or other languages.
- 1 year or more experience working with youth.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
- You must have the physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform the essential
functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations. - All employees working with the YMCA are considered to have supervisory or
disciplinary action relationships over minors. Fingerprints will be taken upon
commencement of employment and will be submitted to the Association Office
human resources department prior to beginning the first day of work. - Staff working on school campuses may be required to complete additional COVID
safety trainings.

Salary Description
The hourly rate for this position is $19.50 – $21.00 per hour, based on experience,
qualifications, and alignment with salary benchmarks for similar roles. Compensation is in
accordance with grant funding approval and program budget requirements.
