Position Summary

The On-Call Substitute Preschool Teacher provides support in creating a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment for children in the YMCA Preschool program. This role steps in as needed to cover the duties of Teachers, Associate Teachers, or Lead Teachers during their absence. The Substitute Teacher assists with implementing lesson plans, supervising children, and maintaining an organized classroom. Flexibility and adaptability to float between classrooms or take on different roles are key to ensuring the smooth operation of the program.

Job Responsibilities

Curriculum & Child Engagement

  • Follow and implement pre-planned lesson plans and activities for children ages 0–5.
  • Supervise and engage with children to ensure their safety and well-being at all times.
  • Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment that promotes respect and learning for all children.

Classroom & Facility Maintenance

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized classroom and play areas.

Flexibility & Team Support

  • Adapt quickly to provide coverage across classrooms and support teaching teams where needed.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Communicate effectively with staff and families as directed by the Lead Teacher or Program Coordinator.

Compliance & Safety

  • Follow all licensing regulations, program policies, and organizational guidelines.
  • Respond promptly to incidents and assist with completing necessary documentation.

Qualifications

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Completion of 6 Early Childhood Education (ECE) units or current enrollment in ECE coursework.
  • Qualified for an Assistant Teacher Permit.
  • Flexibility to work on an on-call basis during program hours (Monday–Friday) at various preschool sites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree or higher in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field.
  • Qualified for an Associate Teacher Permit.
  • Experience working with infants, toddlers, or preschool-aged children.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

The On-Call Substitute Preschool Teacher will work in a classroom setting, engaging in physical activities such as standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 40 lbs. This role requires flexibility to adapt to different classroom environments and schedules, along with effective communication in a dynamic, fast-paced setting.

Salary Description

The hourly rate for this position is $20.00-$27.00 per hour, based on experience, qualifications, and alignment with salary benchmarks for similar roles. Compensation is in accordance with grant funding approval and program budget requirements.
