Position Summary 

The Enrichment Specialist is responsible for designing and leading engaging enrichment programming within YMCA Summer Camp Programs and related youth programs. Specialists may focus on Academic Support (including Math and Literacy), STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math), Dance, Arts, Health & Wellness, Sports & Recreation, or other specialty areas.

Under the supervision of the Site Coordinator, the Enrichment Specialist develops and implements high-quality, age-appropriate lessons that align with YMCA curriculum guidelines and Youth Development Principles. The Specialist fosters student engagement, confidence, creativity, and personal growth while maintaining a safe and inclusive learning environment.

Programs primarily serve elementary and/or middle school youth.

Job Responsibilities

Program Planning & Instruction

  • Plan and facilitate engaging, age-appropriate lessons in assigned specialty area(s).
  • Deliver structured enrichment sessions that support skill development, creativity, and confidence.
  • Incorporate project-based learning, performance-based learning, or academic intervention strategies, as appropriate.
  • Align lesson plans and activities with YMCA curriculum guidelines and Youth Development Principles.
  • Prepare participants for showcases, performances, family engagement events, or academic milestones when applicable.
Youth Supervision & Safety
  • Supervise youth during program hours, transitions, and activities.
  • Maintain a safe, structured, supportive, and inclusive learning environment that meets program and organizational standards.
  • Implement behavior guidance strategies consistent with YMCA policies.
Collaboration & Program Quality
  • Collaborate with Camp, Site, and Program Coordinators to ensure consistent and high-quality programming.
  • Work effectively as part of a team to support daily program operations and participant success.
  • Communicate regularly with program staff regarding student progress, needs, and program goals.
Family & Community Engagement
  • Support family engagement events, student showcases, and community activities as assigned.
  • Contribute to positive relationships with families, school partners, and community stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Minimum age:
  • 18 years or older for elementary programs
  • 21 years or older for middle school programs
  • Education (one of the following):
  • Associate’s degree or higher; OR
  • High school diploma or equivalent and one of the following:
    • 48 college units (verified by official transcripts); OR
    • Completion of the California Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST); OR
    • Completion of California Office of Developing Educational Services Personnel (CODESP) requirements
  • Knowledge or demonstrated experience in youth development, particularly within a specialized subject areaStrong teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skillsAvailability Monday–Friday during program hours (between 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.)
  • TB test clearance within the past two years (required for programs operating on school district sites)

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience working with elementary or middle school-aged youth in an educational or enrichment setting
  • Bilingual abilities (e.g., Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, or other languages) are a plus but not required

Work Environment and Physical Demands 

  • This position is based in school, camp, or community-site settings.Work is performed primarily indoors, with some outdoor activities depending on program needs and location.The role involves frequent interaction with children, families, and staff in a dynamic, team-oriented environment.Noise levels may vary and can be moderate to high during program activities.
  • All employees working with the YMCA are considered to have supervisory or disciplinary action relationships over minors.  Fingerprints will be taken upon commencement of employment and will be submitted to the Association Office human resources department prior to beginning the first day of work.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout program spaces for extended periods.
  • Ability to bend, sit, kneel, and crouch to engage with youth at their level.
  • Ability to lift and carry materials and supplies weighing up to approximately 25 pounds.
  • Visual and auditory ability sufficient to supervise participants, lead activities, and ensure safety.

Salary Description  

The Enrichment Specialist position offers a compensation range of $24.00 – $33.00 per hour. This rate is based on salary benchmarking for similar roles and is aligned with grant fund approvals and requirements for the position.
