Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Site Coordinator, the Chinese Tutor is responsible for leading

focused academic tutoring sessions and enrichment activities for youth in YMCA After School

Programs. With the goal of fostering Chinese language acquisition and confidence, the Chinese Tutor will develop and implement lesson plans tailored to support and supplement school-wide efforts in language acquisition.

The Chinese Tutor is responsible for creating and leading Chinese-focused sessions weekly for elementary school-aged youth (K-5th), as directed by the Site Coordinator and program

team. Sessions must be engaging, align with YMCA curriculum guidelines, and incorporate

Youth Development Principles to support students’ academic growth and personal

development.

After School Program Dates

  • San Francisco Sites: August 11, 2025 – June 3, 2026
  • Marin Sites: August 18, 2025 – June 13, 2026

Job Responsibilities

1. Plan and implement engaging, age-appropriate lesson plans for elementary school

students (K-5th) to strengthen language skills and confidence.

2. Provide individualized and group tutoring support to meet diverse learning needs

and promote academic growth.

3. Design and facilitate math-focused enrichment activities that encourage critical

thinking, problem-solving, and a positive attitude toward learning.

4. Create an inclusive and supportive environment that fosters participation and self-confidence in mathematics.

5. Incorporate Youth Development Principles into activities to support students’ social,

emotional, and academic development.

6. Follow YMCA policies and safety guidelines during all tutoring sessions and

activities.

7. Maintain an organized and clean learning space to ensure a productive

environment.

8. Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development

opportunities to improve teaching practices.

9. Perform additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor to support program goals.

Qualifications

  • 18 years or older.
  • Meets school district Instructional Aide requirements of:
  • High school diploma or equivalent AND passed District Instructional Aide

Exam; OR

  • High school diploma or equivalent AND passed California Basic Education

Skills Test (CBEST); OR

  • High school diploma or equivalent AND 48 college units (transcript verification

required); OR

  • Associate’s degree or higher
  • Demonstrated proficiency in mathematics, including but not limited to foundational

arithmetic, algebra, and problem-solving skills.

  • Must be available Monday-Friday, between 1:00-6:00 pm for scheduled enrichments.
  • Able to supervise and guide youth.
  • TB Test clearance within the last 2 years.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience tutoring or teaching Chinese to elementary-aged children.
  • Bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, or other languages.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

The Math Tutor will work in an active after-school program environment, which may include

classroom, outdoor, and recreational spaces.

Salary Description

The Chinese Tutor position offers a compensation range of $20.00 – $40.00 per hour. This rate is based on salary benchmarking for similar roles and is aligned with grant fund approvals and requirements for the position.
