Position Summary
The Cabin Leader plays a key role in creating a safe, engaging camp experience for youth under the guidance of the Program Director. This position includes residing in a cabin with campers, guiding them through daily routines, scheduled activities, and providing general supervision. Cabin Leaders foster a positive environment by leading games, hikes, and other recreational activities during free time and by assisting with camper management at specialized program sites, including the climbing tower, zip line, archery range, canoeing areas, hiking trails, and arts & crafts stations, in collaboration with Program Specialists. Cabin Leaders also support User Groups and help facilitate camp programs as needed. The Cabin Leader II is expected to demonstrate strong initiative, model positive behavior for fellow staff, and take on extra leadership roles to help maintain and enrich camp traditions.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide excellent service to program participants, ensuring their needs are met.
- Prioritize participant safety by following emergency and safety protocols.
- Build respectful, meaningful relationships with staff, parents, and campers.
- Maintain a professional appearance and conduct in interactions with others.
- Foster connections among campers and with the YMCA community.
- Ensure health, hygiene, and safety are top priorities for all campers.
- Support campers in understanding and appreciating their environment.
- Recognize and encourage campers for personal growth and positive behavior.
- Supervise and live with a cabin group, following the camp schedule to meet campers’ needs.
- Plan and lead engaging activities that support personal growth and social skills.
- Maintain appropriate camper discipline according to camp standards.
- Keep camp and cabin areas clean and encourage respect for facilities and the environment.
- Ensure compliance with YMCA, American Camp Association, and all local, state, and federal standards to provide a safe and positive experience for campers and staff.
- Submit reports, including incident reports, health logs, and timecards accurately and on time.
- Actively participate in cabin, unit, and camp-wide activities, and assist in program areas.
Requirements
- Must be 18 years or older.
- 1 or more years’ experience working in a resident youth camp setting.
- Creativity and knowledge in subjects such as arts, culture, health, fitness, and the outdoors.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals of diverse ages, backgrounds, and experiences.
- First Aid and CPR certification (within 30 days of hire).
Work Environment & Physical Demands
The Cabin Leader position involves working closely with campers in an outdoor, collaborative, and safety-focused setting. Leaders will reside in cabins with campers, ensuring supervision and well-being overnight. The role requires physical stamina, mobility, and the ability to lift equipment, lead activities, and assist campers as needed. Extended periods of standing, walking, and participation in physical activities are expected, along with flexibility for long, variable hours, including overnight shifts. Meals and lodging are provided for the duration of the summer camp program.
