Position Summary
The Before School Program Leaders create meaningful and enriching experiences for youth in YMCA programs at local elementary and middle schools. This role directly supports the YMCA’s mission to foster youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility by helping students build academic, physical, and social skills.
Program Leaders will provide academic enrichment and tutoring in classroom groups of up to 20 students, as well as organize and provide outdoor recreational activities in the school yards. Program Leaders work under the direction of Program Site Coordinators and Directors to ensure a positive and impactful program experience. This role requires a commitment to the full academic school year, as well as a proactive and punctual approach to supporting program goals.

Richmond YMCA is seeking Before School Program Leaders for Claire Lilienthal School – 3630 Divisadero St, San Francisco, CA 94123
Program Leader Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and participate in specialized and theme-based curriculum designed to meet the developmental, cultural and individual needs of program participants.
- Monitor participant activities, enforce safety regulations, and respond promptly to emergencies in both virtual and in-person environments.
- Deliver program content and facilitation methods that align with established child safety protocols as outlined by YMCA of San Francisco guidelines.
- Apply Out of School Time best practices to ensure consistent, high-quality, and safe programming.
- Serve as a positive role model for staff, children, and volunteers, promoting a supportive and inclusive environment.
- Maintain accurate and organized administrative records, including attendance logs, emergency information, and adherence to policies and procedures.
- Communicate professionally and respectfully with staff, participants, parents, and volunteers.
- Collaborate with parents, participants, and staff to plan youth program activities that foster engagement and development.
- Ensure all programs comply with safety and security standards as per YMCA of San Francisco guidelines.
- Adhere to policies and procedures outlined in the YMCA Child Care Staff Manual.
- Participate in required staff meetings and training sessions to maintain professional development and program effectiveness.
Minimum Qualifications
- 18+ years of age for elementary school programs
- Associate’s degree or higher, or High School diploma/equivalent, plus any of following:
- Completed 48 college units verified by transcript
- Passed CA Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST)
- Passed District Instructional Aide Exam
- Experience working with youth (elementary or middle school)
- Highly motivated to provide quality program opportunities to youth
- Team player
- Knowledge or expertise in youth development
- Comfortable leading physical activities with youth
- Available daily Monday-Friday during morning program hours; shifts vary ~7:00-10:00 am
- Willing to participate in bi-annual evaluations and supervision meetings as needed
- Current YMCA approved CPR and First Aid certification (training available upon hire)
- TB Test clearance
- Fingerprint background check clearance
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in child development or related field
- Bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, or other languages strongly preferred
- Knowledge of arts, dance, drama, or sports
- Connections in the local community
