Position Summary 

The Aquatics Director, under the guidance of the Associate Executive Director, oversees the development and management of the Presidio Family YMCA’s aquatics programs and facilities. This includes program expansion, staff recruitment and management, scheduling, and compliance with organizational policies and legal requirements.

The role ensures a safe and effective aquatic environment by supervising staff, including the aquatics coordinator, swim instructors, lifeguards, and swim coaches. The Aquatics Director collaborates with the aquatics coordinators to manage group and private lessons, swim team programs, and community outreach efforts. Additionally, this position leads staff trainings, oversees the Safety Committee, and organizes in-service sessions for branch staff.

Job Responsibilities 

Program Management:

  • Develop and expand aquatics programs, including swim lessons, swim teams, and community events like Safety Around Water week.
    • Ensure compliance with organizational policies and safety standards.

Staff Leadership:

  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise aquatics staff, including lifeguards, instructors, and swim team coaches.
    • Conduct staff evaluations, provide mentorship, and lead trainings and certifications.
    • Manage staff schedules and fill in as needed.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Maintain a safe pool environment by enforcing safety protocols, auditing staff performance, and ensuring certifications are up to date.
    • Lead the branch Safety Committee and in-service training sessions.

Community Engagement & Outreach:

  • Build relationships with schools and community groups to recruit participants and expand programming.
    • Support volunteer recruitment for the Annual Giving Campaign.

Operational & Financial Oversight:

  • Manage the department budget to meet fiscal goals.
    • Regularly update program schedules and marketing materials across multiple platforms.

Customer Service:

  • Provide excellent service to members and address program feedback for continuous improvement.

Requirements 

  • College degree or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5 years in aquatics programming, including 2+ years of supervisory and budget management experience.
  • Current lifeguarding, BLS (Basic Life Support), First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen certifications (YMCA-approved or equivalent).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Flexible schedule, including mornings, evenings, and weekends.

Work Environment & Physical Demands 

This position requires extended periods of sitting, standing, and movement based on operational needs. Tasks include sitting at a desk, using a computer, and walking around the pool area. Responsibilities also include lifting and handling equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. The work environment is entirely indoors at the pool facility.

The Aquatics Director position offers a compensation range of $70,000 – $79,000 per year. This rate is based on salary benchmarking for similar roles and is aligned with grant fund approvals and requirements for the position.
