Position Summary

The Alternative to Suspension Clinician is responsible for delivering therapy in accordance with the legal and ethical standards of the profession while upholding the mission of the YMCA of San Francisco. This role provides comprehensive counseling services, including assessments, individual and group therapy, crisis intervention, and case management for youth and families. The position requires a commitment to supporting clients’ well-being through professional, ethical, and compassionate care.

Must be able to travel around in San Mateo County to provide services in multiple school sites.  

Job Requirements

  • Relationship Management & Collaboration 
    • Position is dependent upon successful working relationships with school/funder. Employees are responsible for creating, developing, and maintaining a positive working relationship with school administration. 
    • The lead clinician will also contact the School Safety Advocate to inform them about the students’ progress and plan. The ATS clinician will also discuss any safety concerns and mental health needs with the SSA, and they will work together to determine appropriate referrals if needed. 
    • Participating in collaborative interdisciplinary team meetings regarding school climate. 
    • Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with the clinical team. 
    • Represent the YMCA and the Youth Service Bureau department in the community. 
  • Clinical Responsibilities & Service Delivery 
    • Any student who is identified with a specific need for mental health and/or substance abuse services will be referred to by whoever is determined to be more successful at assisting the student and family to access those services. 
    • Provide short-term and long-term therapeutic outcomes for 80% of students attending the program. 
    • Provide individual, family, and group counseling; crisis intervention; case management and referrals, for all clinic clients. Clinical services provided in YSB clinic. 
    • Maintain high-quality, HIPAA-compliant clinical charting and records using an electronic health care records system. 
    • Maintain confidential clinical charts and timely service reporting. 
    • Track statistics concerning the type and amount of service provided. 
  • Compliance & Program Evaluation 
    • Collect program evaluation and reporting data in a timely manner as directed within the program. 
    • Complete all mandatory ADP LMS safety training and Y-USA e-Learning before the first shift in the facility. 
    • Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting, and risk management. 
  • Supervision & Professional Development 
    • Meet with the program director for programmatic and clinical supervision. 
    • Attend staff meetings and training as required. 
    • Demonstrate competencies and willingness to develop in the Cause-Driven Leadership areas of Advancing our Mission and Cause, Building Relationships, Leading Operations, and Developing & Inspiring Others. 
  • Organizational Values & Other Duties

  • All other duties as assigned by your supervisor. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field and 4+ years of experience in social work with youth and families OR; 
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. 
  • Proficient with MS Office 365 
  • Must be available Monday-Friday 8am – 4:30pm. Flexible based on school day 
  • Ability to assess and provide therapy to a diverse client and student population. 
  • Strong ability to navigate school environments with diplomacy and collaboration while upholding client confidentiality standards. 
  • Strong ability to work effectively with diverse populations. 
  • Must have access to reliable transportation 
  • Current YMCA approved CPR and First Aid certification 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in crisis management, collaboration, school services and provision of training 
  • A master’s degree in counseling, psychology or social work with at least 1 year working with youth and their families 
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish 

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • You must have physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation. 
  • All employees working with the YMCA are considered to have supervisory or disciplinary action relationships over minors.  Fingerprints will be taken upon commencement of employment and will be submitted to the Association Office human resources department prior to beginning the first day of work.
  • Staff working on school campuses may be required to complete additional COVID safety training.

Salary Description

The hourly rate for this position is $30 – $33 Per Hour based on experience, qualifications, and alignment with salary benchmarks for similar roles. Compensation is in accordance with program budget requirements.
