The Youth Volunteer Program is for teens in middle and high school, ages 14-17. This program aims to help build a foundation of confidence, responsibility, knowledge, and skills.

Make new friends and learn new skills by volunteering at youth development programs such as, after school, day camp, and preschool. This youth volunteer program is a fun and challenging way to spend time giving back to your community! Youth Volunteers will learn leadership skills and develop an appreciation for the importance of being a role-model in the community.

Responsibilities

Youth & teen volunteers will assist the program's site director or coordinator with:

  • homework support
  • snack preparation and clean-up
  • reading/storytelling 
  • organization of art projects
  • field trip support
  • kindergarten check-in
  • community circle time
  • recreation time
  • restocking/organization of program supplies
  • food pantry clean-up
  • general support of the program director or site coordinator

 

Volunteer locations:

  • Dolores Huerta Elementary School
  • Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy
  • Hillcrest Elementary School
  • Monroe Elementary School
  • Sunnyside Elementary School
  • Visitacion Valley Elementary School
  • Preschool/Early Childhood Education at Mission YMCA
  • Food Pantry Program at Mission YMCA

 

Volunteer Schedule

Depending on site or program needs as well as volunteer availability, volunteers can expect to support a few hours a week (3 hours or more) Monday-Friday. 

The following school site locations would need support from 3:00-6:00 pm:

  • Monroe Elementary
  • Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy
  • Sunnyside Elementary
  • Visitacion Valley Elementary
  • Dolores Huerta Elementary

The following school site would need support from 1:00-5:00 pm:

  • Hillcrest Elementary School

Programs at the Mission Y would need support on:

  • Tuesdays, 7:00 am-11:00 am, for the Food Pantry Program
  • Preschool/Early Childhood Education Program, Monday-Friday, flexible hours

Requirements

  • Youth must be under the age of 18 (ages 14-17)
  • Complete the Youth Volunteer Application
  • Complete Waiver
  • Youth must be registered by enrolling in the Youth Volunteer Program in-person at the Mission YMCA
  • Attend interview with the hiring manager
  • Provide 2 letters of recommendation. One personal reference from a family member or friend and one professional from a  teacher, coach, or school counselor.
  • Youth will always be accompanied with a YMCA staff personnel at all times
  • Minimum of 4 years between youth and oldest child in program  (At after school, youth volunteers can only support with grades K-2)
  • Complete in-person orientation within 30 days of start date
  • Wear volunteer t-shirt while in program
