Since 1886, the Buchanan Y has been an active community leader in providing programs that meet the needs of the diverse families living in Japantown and the Western Addition. These communities struggle with disproportionate levels of poverty, violence, crime and unemployment as well as low levels of educational attainment. We are committed to improving our community's health and well-being and we believe no one should be turned away due to the inability to pay.
Our Annual Giving Campaign brings together volunteers, members, donors and staff to make an impact and raise funds that allow us to provide financial assistance to the youth, teens and adults who participate in our programs. The Buchanan Y counts on your support now more than ever!
EVERYDAY IMPACT
Youth and Government
Teens from the Western Addition simulate the various positions of the California State Legislature and State Court Systems. The Y subsidizes 75% of each participant's fee to ensure this program is affordable for all.
Before and After School
We serve over 500 youth and teens daily through before and after school programs. Our staff are well-versed in youth development principles and provide students with academic support, enrichments and physical education.
Family Outreach
The Western Addition Beacon Center serves 250 youth and 100 adults annually through after school programs, summer camp and adult literacy and workforce development programs.
Summer Camp
We provide a safe and exciting environment for over 300 campers each summer. A combination of parent fees, grant funding and financial assistance make our camps affordable for all children.
