Dr. Jeremy Welland

With almost 30 years of experience across cloud, green-tech, fin-tech, media-tech, and management consulting, Dr. Welland has developed a deep expertise in designing and deploying AI, data science, and data analytics products and services. He is a Global Data & Analytics leader who leverages the impact which data insights have on business results, operational effectiveness and efficiency, and data-driven culture change. He is a storytelling expert with experience building measurable analytics programs and custom AI and data platforms in collaboration with Product and Engineering teams.
Dr. Welland recently served as the Chief Data Officer of Gusto, a private 12-year-old HR tech company ($10B valuation) with over 300,000 customers and a half billion in trailing annual recurring revenue. Gusto runs payroll for two million Americans and moves a tenth of a trillion dollars through the US banking system. Dr. Welland leads the data strategy and execution for the company. As Head of Data, he oversees the data platform, analytics engineering, business intelligence, data science and artificial intelligence (AI).
Prior to Gusto, Dr. Welland was the Global Head of Data and Analytics at Google Cloud where his teams located in NA, EMEA and APAC regions leveraged data tools at scale to enhance the customer support experience. Previous to Google, Dr. Welland led teams within Customer Marketing Insights, People Analytics, Finance, Operations, and Enterprise Data Analytics in the Office of the CEO and President. Dr. Welland has led data teams at PayPal / Venmo, Pandora Radio, Pacific Gas & Electric Company, and Willis Towers Watson.
In 2022, Dr. Welland was appointed to the Board of Directors of YMCA of the USA, the nation’s premier large non-profit organization serving 22 million Americans, with $7.4 B in revenue and 20,000 employees. He currently serves on the Executive Committee [Secretary], Compensation Committee, and Strategy Committee. He has held previous roles on the Finance Committee, Audit Committee, Board Nominating Committee, Tech Advisory Council, and Development Committee.
Dr. Welland has been honored with numerous awards, including Volunteer of the Year of the San Francisco YMCA. Dr. Welland serves on the adjunct faculty at the University of the Pacific’s School of Engineering and Computer Science, and he teaches a capstone course in the Data Science Masters Degree Program. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife, two children and Goldendoodle. He enjoys mountain biking, cooking, and playing the drums.
