About the Job

We are seeking a strong and experienced professional to ensure the continued success of the Mission YMCA. This operation includes a community facility with a licensed preschool, six off-site afterschool locations and multiple other community programs. The Executive Director will oversee the total operation for a $6MM Branch, including:  board development, fundraising including annual giving and sustaining development, volunteer and community relations, staff supervision, program development and operations, and fiscal management. Directs and manages the plans, finances, programs, activities, and staff.  Directs the branch towards achievement of its operating plan. Oversees and implements policies, programs, and practices.  The executive must understand the complexity of the community and the significance of collaboration and partnership with public and private resources.

Nature and Background

  • This position requires a bachelor’s degree in related field. Graduate degree preferred. 
  • Five or more years of professional, senior, management experience including work as an Associate Executive Director or equivalent required, preferably in the YMCA or similar non-profit or community-based organization.
  • The incumbent must have knowledge of financial development, membership operations, board development, marketing, public relations, fiscal management, human resources, risk management, program development, and staff supervision.
  • This position is concerned primarily with the achievement of the purpose, goals and objectives of the organization, as it carries on a variety of activities with members and constituents. 
  • The Executive Director works closely with the volunteer organization in the development of plans and practices and, after they are adopted, is charged with the responsibility of seeing that they are executed. Thus, s/he is required to understand the basic nature of the YMCA as a volunteer organization and the respective roles that are carried by volunteers and by staff. 
  • S/he must also be aware of the community, its problems, needs and resources, both physical and human. The incumbent works closely with the Board of Managers in matters of fund development, and planning.
  • S/he must have knowledge and understanding of management skills in the administration of the business affairs of the Branch, within its local structure and scope, as will as its place in the YMCA field, national and world-wide setting.  S/he must possess ability and skills in fundraising, human resources, and in working with a diverse employee and volunteer workforce.
  • This position is heavily weighed on the human relations side.  It is necessary that s/he have a clear understanding of the relationship of the general public to the Branch, of staff to volunteer, and of intra-staff actions. 
  • S/he must be able to delegate appropriate responsibilities involved in day-to-day operations. 
  • S/he must guide or direct all actions within a continuing consciousness of the operating objectives of the Branch as defined in long- and short-range Branch plan.
  • Knowledge of the neighborhoods of the Excelsior, the Mission, Bernal Heights, Glen Park, Noe Valley and a proven ability to work in this or similar communities, and bilingual capacity in English/Chinese or English/ Spanish are preferred.
  • Knowledge and expertise in the following areas is preferred: youth development, specifically school-based programming, licensed childcare, and early care and education, senior programming and other community programs.
