Position Summary 

Under the supervision of the Community Programs Director, the Recreation Specialist is responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing engaging recreational activities for youth at both after-school program sites and YMCA branch locations. This role focuses on promoting physical activity, social connection, and personal growth while ensuring a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all participants. 

Job Responsibilities 

  • Plan, organize, and lead youth sports and recreational activities that promote teamwork, skill-building, and physical fitness in a structured, supportive environment. 
  • Mentor and coach youth participants, providing individualized guidance in areas such as conflict resolution, teamwork, and learning from challenges. 
  • Ensure all activities are delivered on schedule, aligned with YMCA standards, and maintain a safe, welcoming environment. 
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure smooth program delivery and consistently positive participant experiences. 
  • Communicate effectively with staff, youth, and parents to address concerns and maintain program alignment. 
  • Be punctual, dependable, and organized, ensuring program equipment is managed and transported as needed. 
  • Adapt to program needs, maintaining flexibility in scheduling and responsiveness to participant requirements. 
  • Act as a positive role model, fostering respect, inclusion, and personal development among participants. 
  • Exhibit professionalism, reliability, and a commitment to delivering high-quality activities aligned with YMCA values. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor to support overall program success. 

Qualifications 

  • 18+ years or older 
  • Associate’s degree or higher, or High School diploma/equivalent with one of the following:  
  • 48+ completed college units (verified by transcript),  
  • Passing score on the CA Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST), or  
  • Passing score on a District Instructional Aide Exam. 
  • Proficient in leading physical activities with youth. 
  • Must be available: Monday-Friday, between 1:00-6:00 pm for scheduled enrichments. 
  • Able to supervise and mentor youth. 
  • TB Test clearance within last 2 years. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience teaching physical education or coaching sports to school-aged children. 
  • Bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, or other languages.
