After School Program Leader Position Overview
The YMCA After School Program Leader provides meaningful and enriching opportunities for youth in YMCA programs that are offered at local elementary and middle schools. We are looking for leaders who are passionate about empowering young minds and creating positive experiences for youth! After School Program Leaders will provide academic enrichment and tutoring in classroom groups of up to 20 students, as well as organize and provide outdoor recreational activities in the school yards.
Individuals hired for this position will work under the supervision of the Program Site Coordinators and Directors, and will need to be flexible, willing to take initiative, be punctual, and able to make a commitment to work throughout the entire school year. Job Responsibilities
- Curriculum Development & Program Delivery
- Develop and implement engaging, inclusive, and theme-based curricula tailored to the developmental and cultural needs of youth.
- Lead academic enrichment sessions, tutoring, and organized outdoor recreational activities.
- Collaborate with staff, parents, and participants to plan program activities.
- Supervision & Safety
- Supervise and support groups of up to 14 students, ensuring safety and compliance with YMCA and child-safe protocols.
- Monitor participants, respond swiftly to critical incidents, and enforce safety regulations.
- Record-Keeping & Compliance
- Maintain accurate program records, including attendance, emergency information, and safety logs.
- Communication & Engagement
- Communicate respectfully with participants, parents, staff, and volunteers.
- Training & Development
- Complete required safety and program training before the first shift and attend all mandatory meetings and training sessions.
Minimum Qualifications
- 18+ years of age for elementary school programs
- For ExCEL/ELOP sites Associate’s degree or higher, or High School diploma/equivalent, plus any of following:
- Completed 48 college units verified by transcript
- Passed CA Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST)
- Passed District Instructional Aide Exam
- For Licensed Childcare Sites: meet any one of following requirements:
- 6 units completed in early childhood education or child development prior to employment, and enrolled to complete at least 2 units each semester/quarter until further education requirements are met
- 12 units completed in early childhood education or child development core courses verified by transcript (6 of 12 units may be in other applicable subjects), and at least 6 months of experience in a childcare center
- 240 hours of verified training hours or equivalent experience in a youth development program
- Child Development Associate Teacher Permit or higher (from CCTC)
- Experience working with youth (elementary or middle school)
- Highly motivated to provide quality program opportunities to youth
- Team player
- Knowledge or expertise in youth development
- Comfortable leading physical activities with youth
- Available daily Monday-Friday during youth program hours; shifts vary ~1:00-6:00 pm
- Willing to participate in bi-annual evaluations and supervision meetings as needed
- Current YMCA approved CPR and First Aid certification (training available upon hire)
- TB Test clearance
- Fingerprint background check clearance
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent
- Bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, or other languages strongly preferred
- Knowledge of arts, dance, drama, or sports
- Connections in the local San Francisco community
Work Environment and Physical Demands
The After School Program Leader works in a dynamic environment at local elementary or middle school sites, including indoor classrooms and outdoor schoolyards.
The role involves frequent standing, walking, and active participation in physical activities such as recreational sports and games. The environment can be fast-paced and loud, and the role may require occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds.

Salary Description
The After School Program Leader position offers a compensation range of $19.50 – $22.00 per hour. This rate is based on salary benchmarking for similar roles and is aligned with grant fund approvals and requirements for the position.
After School Program Sites and Schedule
San Francisco ASP sites: must be able to work till school year ends June 4, 2025. We are in urgent need of an After School Program Leader who can commit to this schedule.
