After School Program Leader Position summary

YMCA After School Program Leaders provide meaningful and enriching opportunities for youth in YMCA programs that are offered at local elementary and middle schools. The Program Leader will help students develop and strengthen academic, physical, and social skills by providing assistance, tutoring, and mentorship in the After School Program. Program Leaders will provide academic enrichment and tutoring in classroom groups of up to 20 students, as well as organize and provide outdoor recreational activities in the school yards. Individuals hired for this position will work under the supervision of the Program Site Coordinators and Directors, and will need to be flexible, willing to take initiative, be punctual, and able to make a commitment to work throughout the entire school year.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and participate in specialized and theme-based curriculum designed to meet the developmental, cultural and individual needs of program participants.
  • Monitor participant activities, enforce safety regulations, and respond promptly to emergencies in both virtual and in-person environments.
  • Deliver program content and facilitation methods that align with established child safety protocols as outlined by YMCA of San Francisco guidelines.
  • Apply Out of School Time best practices to ensure consistent, high-quality, and safe programming.
  • Serve as a positive role model for staff, children, and volunteers, promoting a supportive and inclusive environment.
  • Maintain accurate and organized administrative records, including attendance logs, emergency information, and adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with staff, participants, parents, and volunteers.
  • Collaborate with parents, participants, and staff to plan youth program activities that foster engagement and development.
  • Ensure all programs comply with safety and security standards as per YMCA of San Francisco guidelines.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures outlined in the YMCA Child Care Staff Manual.
  • Participate in required staff meetings and training sessions to maintain professional development and program effectiveness.
  • Uphold YMCA policies regarding safety, supervision, mandated reporting, and risk management practices.
  • Demonstrate YMCA’s core values of caring, respect, honesty, and responsibility in all interactions.
  • Exhibit commitment to professional growth by developing competencies in areas such as mission advancement, relationship building, operational effectiveness, and leadership development.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor to support program success.

Job Requirements

  • 18+ years of age for elementary school programs, 21+ years for middle school programs
  • Associate’s degree or higher, or High School diploma/equivalent, plus any of following:
  • Completed 48 college units verified by transcript
  • Passed CA Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST)
  • Passed District Instructional Aide Exam
  • Experience working with youth (elementary or middle school)
  • Highly motivated to provide quality program opportunities to youth
  • Team player who can collaborate well in activities as an after-school program leader.
  • Knowledge or expertise in youth development
  • Comfortable leading physical activities with youth
  • Available daily Monday-Friday during youth program hours; shifts vary ~1:00-6:00 pm
  • Willing to participate in bi-annual evaluations and supervision meetings as needed
  • Complete all mandatory ADP LMS safety training and Y-USA e-Learning before the first shift in the facility.
  • Current YMCA approved CPR and First Aid certification (training available upon hire)
  • TB Test clearance
  • Fingerprint background check clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field
  • Bi-Lingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, or other languages strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of arts, dance, drama, or sports which can be utilized by an after-school program leader.
  • Connections in the local San Francisco, Peninsula, or Marin community

Pay Range

$19.50- $22.00 Per Hour
