Building Futures
Building Futures is a therapeutic 1-to-1 mentoring program serving at-risk youth ages 6-18 in the Bay Area.
The Building Futures Mentoring Program provides 1-to-1 mentoring to at-risk youth ages 6 - 18 in San Francisco, Marin, San Mateo and Oakland. Mentors meet with their mentees once each week for an average of 2 hours over a 1-year period. We help children develop tools to cope with issues such as low self-esteem, family and peer conflicts, academic underachievement and decision-making skills. Youth are referred from schools and other YMCA programs.
Building Futures is unique from other mentoring programs as it provides a 21-hour paraprofessional training to all mentors before matching, preparing them to work successfully with at-risk youth by developing relationship-building skills, exploring issues facing at-risk youth, and strategies to handle difficult situations. Thorough ongoing support is provided by the coordinator who is a Marriage and Family Therapist Intern.
