Swim Instructor
Description
General Function
Provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes.
Swim Instructors must have the ability to motivate others in the areas of self-awareness and self-confidence through swimming and aquatics. Individual must be able to interpret YMCA aquatic program philosophies, and relate to public, parents and students in a positive manner.
Skills and Requirements
General Requirements:
• Minimum 18 years of age.
• Current YMCA approved first aid certification.
• Current YMCA approved CPR certification.
• YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent.*
• Demonstrated ability to lead children in the development of swimming skills.
• Ability to observe and instruct participants in proper stroke techniques.
• All employees working with the YMCA are considered to have supervisory or disciplinary action relationship over minors. Fingerprints will be taken upon commencement of employment and will be submitted to the Association Office human resources department prior to beginning the first day of work. Employees may be rechecked every two years.
*Within 90 days of employment or at first available training.
Minimum Physical Requirements
• Physical, visual and auditory ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.
• Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the ability to respond swiftly in an emergency situation
• Ability to adequately observe participants’ activities and enforce safely regulations.
• Position regularly requires the ability to do bending, kneeling and leaning.
• Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds (small to mid-sized child) in order to perform essential functions.
