Class Descriptions

For maximum learning potential, participants wishing to register for any non-beginner class must present a report card or evaluation slip from an instructor. To set up an evaluation, please contact Kara Petak at (415) 242-7131.

  

Parent/Child Program (6 months - 3 years)

Classes focus on water adjustment, water safety, and basic swim movements. It also promotes parent/child bonding and encourages early socialization in a fun environment. Each child must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Classes are 30 minutes in length.

Instructor:Participant Ratio = 1:8

 

Shrimp
Parents/guardians accompany their infants and toddlers in this introductory water orientation class. Parents will learn basic cues and holds to teach their children basic water skills.

Kipper
Must have completed at least one session of Shrimp. This class builds off the skills learned in Shrimp to further develop a child’s level of comfort and competence in the water.

 

 

Preschool Program (ages 3-5 years) 

Children will learn basic swim skills without the assistance of their parents.

Instructor:Student Ratio = 1:4 Pike; 1:5 Eel/Ray

 

Pike (Beginning level; no prerequisites)
Children learn water adjustment, basic water skills, and water safety.

Eel
Participants must be comfortable submerging their face in the water and able to perform a front float and back float. Children will learn the crawl stroke, front and back kicks, and elementary backstroke.
 

Ray
Participants must be able to swim 10 yards of crawl stroke and back stroke unassisted. Children will improve their basic stroke skills, build endurance, and learn the dolphin kick, kneeling dive, and how to tread water.

 

 

Youth Program (ages 6-14 years)

Participants will learn basic to advanced water skills, stroke techniques, personal safety, water safety and rescue skills.

Instructor: Student Ratio = 1:5 Polliwog/Flounder; 1:6 Guppy/Minnow, 1:8 Fish/Fly Fish

 

Polliwog (Beginning level; no prerequisites)
Youth will learn to float, breath control, water orientation, and basic water skills.

Flounder
Must be able to submerge, float on front/back, and perform water bobs.
Youth will learn basic water skills including kicking, basic strokes, and water safety.
 

Guppy
Participants must be able to swim crawl stroke and back stroke for 15 yards.
Youth will develop their crawl stroke, backstroke and elementary backstroke.

Minnow
Participants must be able to swim 25 yards of crawl stroke, backstroke, and elementary backstroke. Youth will further develop stroke technique in addition to learning breaststroke, dolphin kick and other water skills.

Fish
Participants must be able to swim 50 yards of crawl stroke, backstroke, and breaststroke. Youth will begin refining stroke technique and will learn the butterfly and flip turns.

Flying Fish
Participants must be able to swim 100 yards of crawl stroke, backstroke, and breaststroke, and 50 yards of the butterfly in addition to being able to tread water for 2 minutes. Youth will learn advanced stroke technique, and all competitive turns. Emphasis on endurance and leadership skills. This class will prepare participants for a competitive swim team if desired.

Benefit from working one on one with a YMCA swim instructor.

We offer private (one-on-one) as well as semi-private (two or more) swim lessons for members of all ages and skill levels.  Lessons may be customized to suit the needs of each swimmer.  Lessons are thirty minutes or an hour in length.

Stingrays Swim Team (6 yrs - 18 yrs)

In addition to technical stroke development, our swim team emphasizes teamwork, sportsmanship and the enjoyment of doing one's best. The team meets twice a week on Monday and Wednesday from 4:30 – 5:30pm. New members should come by during practice time to try out.

The team competes against other YMCA's throughout the year.

Stop by the pool during one of these fun family times!

 

Family Pool Night
The first and third Friday of each month from 6:30 - 8:00pm. Participate in family games, relay races, and more water fun!

Recreational Swim
This time is set aside for those who enjoy a relaxing swim or just to play in the water. Recreational swim is the perfect time to bring the family for basic free swim. Toys and floatation devices are available for use.

Credit and Refund Policy:

1. You must cancel your reserved space two (2) weeks before the program begins to qualify for a refund or credit.* You may choose one of the following options:
a) A transfer to another YMCA program during the same session, provided space is available.
b) A credit for future use of YMCA programs** (must be used within one (1) year of date issued)
c) A refund: to your credit card or allow fifteen (15) working days for a check to be mailed to you. **

2. If the YMCA cancels a program, you may choose one of the following:
a) A full credit to be used towards another Stonestown Family YMCA program.
b) A full refund to be mailed to you within fifteen (15) working days.
c) A full refund to your credit card upon request.


*Within two (2) weeks of the program, credits may be available with written notice from doctor and Program Director’s approval.

**A $10 processing fee for credits and a $20 processing fee for refunds will apply to each cancellation.

 

The YMCA reserves the right to cancel any program due to low enrollment.
There are no refunds or prorates after the program has begun.
Full payments are due at the time of registration for all Sports and Aquatics programs.

Swim Lesson Policies and Procedures:

1. A parent or guardian must be in the facility for the entire duration of their child's swim lesson.

2. Instructors reserve the right to move participants to a different level if the one in which the participant is enrolled is inappropriate. If no appropriate level class is available, participants will be issued a refund or credit.

3. If necessary the instructor may combine classes in similar levels as long as the instructor/student ratio is not exceeded.

4. Prior to the start of the session, if there are 3 empty spaces in the class, that class may be cancelled. If convenient, participants in this class may be transferred into another class of the same level at a different time. If no class is available, a refund or credit will be issued.

5. Payment in full is required to reserve a space in the class.

6. Our class schedule and fee structures do not allow makeup classes.

7. Children not potty trained must wear swim diapers.

8. Parents or guardians must remain in the designated area of the pool deck.

 

Private Swim Lesson Policies and Procedures:

1. Due to high demand it may take up to one month for an instructor to be assigned.

2. Lessons are assigned on a first come first served limited basis.

3. 24 hours notice must be given if a class is going to be missed. Lessons will be forfeited if notice was not received.

4. Semi-private lessons are for two or more swimmers of equal skill level and close in age.

5. Lessons must be used within four months of purchase date.
