Point Bonita YMCA Offers a series of Field & Family Adventures in the spectacular Marin Headlands! Join our experienced naturalists for a morning hike on the various themes designed to introduce you to the many faces of our amazing, local National Park!

Themes alternate monthly between adult and family-oriented focuses. Adult hikes offer moderate trail distances, hill grades, and age-appropriate discussion topics. Family-friendly versions of that same theme is offered on alternating months, with shorter trail hikes and activities geared toward children’s sensibilities.

$10/Adult  $5/Youth

Things to Bring for your adventure:

• Bagged lunch
 
• Layers (The temperature in the Marin Headlands can vary widely from the rest of the Bay Area.) Waterproof rain coat or poncho, warm hat, sweatshirt or sweater.
 
• Hiking shoes
 
• Water bottle
 
• Sun protection (sunscreen, lip balm, hat with a brim)
 
• Camera and/or journal for recording your adventure
 
• Binoculars

It's raptor migration season! Come explore the world of raptors for a day of incredible views of the San Francisco Bay area!

 

Family Friendly Hawk Walk October 16, 2011, 10:30am- 1:30pm.

Bring your whole family for a fun-filled day exploring the world of raptors with incredible views of San Francisco and the Bay area!

 

YMCA Family Friendly Nature Art- November 20, 2011, 10:30am- 1:30pm.

Bring your family for an adventure in Art! We will look at the work of Andy Goldsworthy for inspiration, and then create our own ephemeral nature art.

No Field & Family hikes in the winter (December-February).

Wildflower Walk: Watch Spring Come Alive in the Headlands! March 18, 2012, 10:30am - 1:30pm.

Spring is in bloom! Come join an experienced YMCA naturalist to explore all the beauty that spring has to offer here in the Marin Headlands.

 

Earth Day Wildflower Walk - April 15, 2012, 11:30-1:00pm and 2pm – 3:30pm FREE.

Bring your family for an exploration of spring in its most spectacular! We will be looking for what is blooming, but we will also discuss other plants, birds, insects and whatever else may catch our eyes. We’ll play nature games, make art, and enjoy a beautiful spring day together in the Marin Headlands.

 

Marine Mammals of the Golden Gate - May 20, 2012, 10:30am - 1:30pm. Join an experienced YMCA naturalist for a day of learning all about the fascinating adaptations of our local marine mammals, while exploring the trails of the beautiful Marin Headlands.

 

Summer 2012

Marine Mammal–o-Rama (Family) - June 17, 2012, 10:30am-1:30pm.

Spend the day in the Marin Headlands learning about the fascinating world of Marine Mammals.

 

Geology Rocks (Adults) - July 15, 2012, 10:30am - 1:30pm.

Come learn about the fascinating geological history of the Californian coast with a knowledgeable YMCA naturalist!

 

Geology Rocks! (Family)- August 19, 2012, 10:30am - 1:30pm.

Explore rocks! Play at the beach! Learn about the fascinating geological history of the Marin Headlands and the forces that shaped the California Coast.

 

Day Hikes, Teambuilding and Service Learning in the Marin Headlands!

Come explore the spectacular California coast and its unique ecosystems through a field trip everyone will remember.

Each day of CoastTrek is a unique experience, tailored to the teachers, students, and conference guests we serve. Check out the Outdoor Education Program Topics to find a complete list of the exploration options available.

Take a tour of the Point Bonita lighthouse, visit our local tidepools, and learn about native plants...options to discover and learn abound. Or, hone in your groups' ability to work together effectively through our series of facilited group Challenges. Challenges are initiatives that teach listening and leadership, conflict resolution, and communication skills that will benefit children and adults throughout their lives.

 

For teachers and students, CoastTrek is an affordable quick taste of our residential Outdoor Education Program.

For our conference guests, what a great way to enjoy nature or build trust and team-building among your group! CoastTreks can range from two hours to an entire day.

 

Cost

$45/hour per naturalist, $150 minimum. For school groups, naturalist group size is limited to 15 students.
