General Function

Maintain safe swimming environment in the pool, on the pool deck and surrounding areas.

Skills and Requirements

Know How

Possess mature judgment and sound decision-making. Have the ability to relate to people in a positive, but firm manner, and interpret YMCA aquatic program philosophy. Is observant, safety conscious, and able to react calmly and quickly in an emergency situation.

Entry Requirement

1. Minimum 18 years of age.

2. Current YMCA approved first aid certification.

3. Current YMCA approved CPR certification.

4. Lifeguard certification*.

5. Ability to maintain certification level of physical and mental readiness.

*YMCA Lifeguard certification must be obtained within 90 days of employment, or at first available training.

Essential Functions

1. Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, on deck and surrounding areas

2. Prevents accidents by maintaining constant observation of the pool area, enforcing health and safety standards, and maintaining readiness to respond to an emergency.

3. Maintains records of the pool chemical readings. Takes pool attendance and maintains related records as required.

4. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency procedures. Completes incident reports as necessary.

5. Maintains effective relationships with the public, participants and other staff members. Provides information about programs and schedules as necessary.

6. Communicates regularly with aquatic management staff.

7. Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.

8. Checks rescue equipment, and promptly report equipment problems.

9. Demonstrate the "Character Counts" values of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility in all your dealings with members, guests, volunteers and fellow staff.

10. Participate in training and abides by the "New Perspectives" guidelines for the YMCA of San Francisco.

11. All other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
