Specialty Summer Camps

Specialty Camps give your campers a more in-depth experience with the subjects of each week. We contract with other organizations so that our campers have access to specialists and experts in the fields. Campers spend 3-4 hours of each day getting instruction in their specialty, then doing a variety of other camp activities to ensure that they get a well-rounded day of games, songs, arts and sports.

Sports Summer Camps

Our Sports Camps teach fundamentals of each sport through a variety of fun drills and skill exercises. All levels of players can enjoy the lessons, drills, games and celebrations. Most of these camps spend half the day working within the sport theme of the week and half the day exploring the Presidio, playing group games and creating arts and crafts.

Engineering Challenge (Session 10)

Work with your teammates and Play-Well TEKnologies to complete the mission. Construct trucks, bridges, elevators, cranes, bulldozers, conveyor belts and other motorized and alternatively powered contraptions. Familiarity with the LEGO® Technic building system builds upon skills learned in Engineering FUNdamentals camp.

EJ’s Cooking with Class (Session 7)

Have you ever had Won Ton Soup? How about chicken quesadillas? Have a chance to make some of your favorite foods and try some new ones. EJ Yurkov returns to camp to teach campers how to safely prepare and enjoy diverse, nutritious dishes, using fresh ingredients. We will prepare and enjoy our own meals, learn basic cooking skills and kitchen safety.

Filmmaking (Session 8)

Welcome to the world of filmmaking, where campers will write, film, edit and present their film. This camp will foster every youth’s creative spirit and will offer them the chance to present their masterpieces at an end-of-the-week film screening.

Magic the Gathering (Session 4)

Campers requested it and we listened! Magic the Gathering is a strategic card game that is full of complex fun, giving campers a chance to strengthen their math, logic and reasoning skills. We will teach basic rules, hold discussions on how different cards work and solve puzzles based on game play. Each day we will play against each other in different tournament games. Campers will also spend a part of the day doing a variety of other fun camp activities.

Photography (Session 6) (four days)

Learn the basics of camera operation, composition and get a chance to explore the city with your camera. Youth will look for interesting themes to capture, and discuss what appeals to their tastes. We will have an Art show at the end of the week to showcase the camper’s work. Cameras will be provided.

Sailing (Session 5)

Each day, campers will head to Lake Merced and receive instruction from the US Sailing certified instructors of the San Francisco State Community Youth Sailing Program. Campers must pass a swim test showing their ability to swim 100 yards and tread water for two minutes without difficulty by two weeks prior to camp. Try sailing camp, where your child will build character through its emphasis on self-reliance, teamwork and sportsmanship.

CAMPERS WILL ARRIVE BACK TO CAMP AT 5:00PM.

SEE SWIM TEST POLICIES ON PAGE 25

*SWIM CAMP or SWIM LESSONS?

The Presidio Y has many opportunities for you to swim. If you would like to learn how to swim or become a stronger swimmer, we offer swim lessons in both group and private lessons. Requirements

Discipline Policy

Any trouble your child is having at home or school will probably affect their behavior at camp. Please keep the staff informed of any problems so we can be sensitive to your child’s needs. We would like to work as a team with your family for the betterment of your child. This will enable us to provide the best environment for your child’s growth and development.

Our first step is being proactive in our approach towards behavior management. We take action steps before a situation occurs. The more we know about a child’s home and school life, the easier it will be for us to be able to take this step. We also use positive reinforcement by consistently acknowledging good behavior.

The expectations listed below are the general expectations we have for all of our program participants. There are sample rules listed here beneath the expectations.

Respect for Others

  • Keep your hands to yourself
  • No harming each other physically (by hitting, kicking, etc.) or emotionally (name-calling, excluding others)

Safety First

  • Listen to your counselor at all times
  • Report unsafe behavior to your counselor

Speak for Yourself/Listen Attentively

  • Express yourself positively
  • Be supportive of other’s beliefs and ideas

Be Responsible

  • Clean your own messes
  • Help out when asked

If a situation does occur, we will do one of the following:

  • We will give the child a natural and logical consequence to their action. We will discuss this with them to help them understand the connection between their action and the consequence.
  • If it is necessary, the child will be removed from the group in the company of their counselor. This gives the child a chance to cool off and be able to discuss the situation with their counselor in a calm and productive manner.

The camp staff is committed to providing a program in which all children can succeed. In the event that a child’s negative behavior cannot be improved through discussion between counselor and child, the following steps will be taken:

  • Staff will inform the parent of the behavior and seek additional suggestions on how to handle the child’s behavior.
  • If the behavior continues, the parents will be asked to come to the YMCA and meet with the staff to work out a plan to resolve the situation.
  • Pending available resources, we will attempt to provide the necessary extra support (i.e. volunteers, staff, outside organizations) to make success possible.
  • If none the above measures are effective, your child will be asked to leave the program. The safety of all the children is very important to the YMCA.

Minimum Age Requirement

Youth must be at least five years old by November 1st, 2012 and entering kindergarten to participate in camp.

Swim Testing Requirement

Campers will complete a brief shallow water competency check each time they swim to ensure water safety. Campers who do not pass the swim check will simply need to wear a personal flotation device (which we supply). Camps that take place in water environments require a more in-depth swim test (Sailing Camp) and campers cannot participate in those programs if they do not pass the test. Please contact the Membership Department to schedule your swim test date:

415 447 9622 or pmembers@ymcasf.org.

Biking

Campers who choose to bring their own bike and/or helmet must have their equipment inspected by YBike staff prior to using it for camp. Campers who have never ridden a bicycle before should contact the Bike Camp Coordinator at camp@ybike.org prior to registration to arrange for an introduction to biking.

Special Needs

YMCA leaders are encouraging and patient and can help facilitate successful camp experiences for children with mild and moderate disabilities. Our programs are not designed for campers who need significant assistance or personal care, require constant one-on-one support, or have great difficulty managing their behavior in group settings. For those camp needs, the YMCA recommends locating a special needs camp via the American Camp Association. If you have specific questions regarding your child, please contact Kris Struble at kstruble@ymcasf.org to discuss your child’s individual needs.
