The Presidio Community YMCA is looking forward to seeing all of our returning families and meeting new ones this summer. Here at the Presidio Community YMCA Summer Camp, we focus on youth development and provide an emotionally and physically safe environment where your child can build meaningful relationships, explore new interests and build a sense of community. Integrated into all of our camp programs are our four core values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility. Join us for 10 weeks of summer where we will make memories that last a lifetime.

Day Camp focuses on having fun. It offers youth a variety of activities and opportunities to explore their interests. Campers will participate in exciting field trips like visiting lakes, museums, playgrounds, state parks and hiking in the Presidio National Park. We’ll play group games, sing songs, bounce in our bounce house and complete art projects. The Presidio Community YMCA only goes to lakes where there are lifeguards on duty. We always bring one of our own YMCA lifeguards as well. All field trips listed below are subject to change.

Session 1
June 7-11, 2010
The first week of summer is here! Join us as we head out for some recreational swim time in Oakland at Roberts Pool which is known for its beautiful setting in a grove of second growth redwood trees. At Rodeo Beach, we’ll look for egrets and pelicans as we hike to Fort Cronkhite. The Gardens at Heather Farms will present Bug Buddies for Discoverers and Adventurers who will be young entomologists and learn about insects, the most successful life form on the planet. Meanwhile, Explorers and Movin’ On campers will conduct a wetland survey and explore freshwater ecosystems to learn about the role they play in providing critical habitat to terrestrial and aquatic life. Campers will look out for Red-Tailed Hawks as they hike the Bay Area Ridge Trail in the Presidio National Park. We’ll also splash around while we swim next door at our Pool. This week, Explorers and Movin’ On campers will literally be bouncing off the walls as they go rock climbing at Mission Cliffs. Meanwhile, Discoverers and Adventurers will play Giants, Wizards and Elves at Mountain Lake Park.
Session 2
June 14-18, 2010
The summer is still young! This week we’ll get wet at the sunny and sandy Lake Anza in Berkeley. Join us for hiking at Stinson Beach, where Coast Miwoks once ate salmon and built homes out of willows. Later this week, Adventurers and Discoverers will visit the state-of-the-art Moscone Playground. Meanwhile, Explorers and Movin’ On campers will visit the Lawrence Hall of Science where they’ll measure themselves in nanometers at the Nano Zone and play Kalah, the oldest known continuously played game in history. We’ll look for banana slugs on our hike through the Batteries & Bluffs Trail in the Presidio National Park and we’ll float around next door at our Pool. Explorers and Movin’ On campers will take a field trip to the Zeum where they’ll make their own animated movie. Meanwhile, Discoverers and Adventurers will visit the Bay Hall and Discovery Theater at the Bay Area Discovery Museum in Marin.
Session 3
June 21-25, 2010
It’s not over yet! Compete in a sand castle contest after swimming at Lake Temescal in Oakland. Discover the redwood groves and oak woodlands of Mt. Tamalpais in Marin. We’ll also explore the Ecology Trail in the Presidio National Park and we’ll play with a beach ball at our Pool next door. Discoverers and Adventurers will play Everyone’s It Tag at Rochambeau Playground in the Richmond District of San Francisco. Meanwhile, Explorers and Movin’ On campers will visit Adventure Playground in Berkeley where they’ll build, hammer, saw and paint forts, boats and towers in a well-supervised environment. On Friday, we’ll take a tour of the old El Presidio site and complete hands-on activities and crafts at the annual Pasados Celebration in the Presidio.

June 28-July 2, 2010
Another exciting week of field trips! We’ll get our swim trunks wet this week at Robert’s Pool in Oakland. Join us for a stroll through the botanical garden and a hike at Tilden Park. At the Aquarium of the Bay, we’ll see Moon Jellies, Brown Sea Nettles and other animals. Campers will take a hike along the Golden Gate Promenade in hopes of finding Western Fence Lizards in the Presidio National Park and we’ll race each other to the Pool next door. Discoverers and Adventurers will play Zoom at Argonne Playground. Meanwhile, Explorers and Movin’ On campers will play some miniature golf at Malibu Grand Prix.

July 6-9, 2010
The fun continues! We’ll get our feet wet at Lake Anza in Berkeley. Discovers, Adventurers and Explorers will be on the lookout for Sticky Monkeyflowers as we hike at Muir Beach in Marin. Meanwhile, Movin’ On campers will visit the Exploratorium for educator-lead, exciting hands-on activities relating to air and wind. We’ll also take a hike along the beautiful California Coast Trail in the Presidio National Park and will play Monkey in the Middle as we swim next door at our Pool. This week Discoverers, Adventurers and Explorers will go bananas at the annual YMCA of San Francisco Summer Camp Carnival where there will be bounce houses as far as the eye can see. Movin’ On campers will have an introduction to sailing on the bay with fun land and water activities lead by the St. Francis Yacht Club. Only Movin’ On campers must pass a swim test, showing their ability to swim 100 yards and tread for two minutes without difficulty by June 1st. Long live summer! This week we’ll play Marco Polo at Lake Temescal in Oakland. And hopefully, we’ll find some newts at Tennessee Valley in Marin while hiking. Explorers and Movin’ On campers will get an art lesson when they visit the Cartoon Art Museum. Meanwhile, Discoverers and Adventurers will play Snatch at Stern Grove Playground. Join us for an adventurous hike as we keep an eye out for West Coast Lady Butterflies along the Juan Bautista de Anza Trail in the Presidio National Park. We’ll also swim next door at our Pool. Explorers & Movin’ On campers will complete a restoration project with Save the Bay and will plant salt marsh natives like gum plant and salt grass at both marshes in Marin County. Meanwhile, Discoverers and Adventurers will play One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish at Alta Vista Playground.
Session 7
July 19-23, 2010
This week we’ll play Sharks and Minnows in the water at Robert’s Pool in Oakland. Join us for a beautiful ferry ride to Angel Island, where we’ll hike, play at the beach and learn about how this island was an immigration station from 1910-1940. Explorers and Movin’ On campers will try out astronaut gear and space tools at the Beyond Blastoff: Surviving in Space exhibit at the Chabot Space and Science Center. Meanwhile, Discoverers and Adventurers will see, among many plants at the Conservatory of Flowers, Victoria Amazonica, a giant water lily with six foot leaves that can support the weight of a small child. We’ll hike along the Los Lobos Creek Valley Trail in the Presidio National Park and we’ll swim next door at our Pool. Explorers and Movin’ On campers will try to get as many strikes as they can at Presidio Bowl. Meanwhile, Discoverers and Adventurers will play Hot Lava Tag at the Parkside Playground.

Summer fun never ends! Sport your favorite sunglasses as we play at the beach and go swimming at Lake Anza in Berkeley. Then we’re off and away for some hiking at Muir Woods, the redwoods that John Muir once described as “the best tree-lovers monument that could possibly be found in all the forests of the world.” Explorers and Movin’ On campers will visit the four-story rainforest at the Academy of Sciences. Meanwhile, Discoverers and Adventurers will explore MLK Park in Golden Gate Park. We’ll also take a hike along the Mountain Lake Trail in the Presidio National Park and we will swim next door at our Pool. Explorers and Movin’ On campers will show off their ice skating moves at the Yerba Buena Ice Skating Rink. Discoverers and Adventurers will play Elbow Tag at the Fulton Playground in the Richmond District of San Francisco.

August 2-6, 2010

Discoverers, Adventurers and Movin’ On will play What Time Is It Mr. Wolf at Children’s Playground. Meanwhile, Explorers campers will visit the Exploratorium for educator-lead exciting, hands-on activities relating to air and wind. Join us on a quest along the Tennessee Hollow Trail in the Presidio National Park and for a swim next door at our pool. Discoverers, Adventurers and Movin’ On campers will slide to their heart’s content at the Yerba Buena Playground. Explorers will have an introduction to sailing with fun land and water activities lead by the St. Francis Yacht Club. Explorer campers only must pass a swim test, showing their ability to swim 100 yards and tread for two minutes without difficulty by June 1st. August 9-13, 2010
For our last week, campers will visit the Farallones Marine Sanctuary Visitor Center here in the Presidio for some fun, educational programming. We will take a hike along the Park Boulevard Trail in the Presidio National Park and we’ll play with Pool Noodles as we swim next door at our pool. Campers will take a trip to Fort Point and will see the lighthouse, built in 1930, that still stands today. Discoverers and Adventurers will also have a chance to hike up to Julius Khan Playground where they’ll play Capture the Flag. Meanwhile, Explorers and Movin’ On campers will have their socks knocked off when they visit Ripley’s Believe it or Not this week. On Friday, we’ll have our End of the Summer BBQ (no lunch needed) at El Polin Springs in the Presidio to celebrate our last day together.
Specialty Camps focus on a particular theme and allow campers to develop special interests. Campers receive quality instruction in their camp specialty for approximately three to four hours. The remainder of the day is spent exploring the Presidio National Park, playing group games and completing arts and crafts projects.

Lions, tigers and bears, oh my! Come learn all about different kinds of animals from worms to sea lions. We’ll visit Hasani, the baby gorilla at the San Francisco Zoo. Join us for an amazing field trip to the Academy of Sciences where we’ll see the albino American alligator. Then we’re off to Pets Unlimited where we’ll have the chance to learn how the shelter cares for cute and cuddly puppies, kittens, cats and dogs. Campers will visit the Insect Discovery Lab for a hands-on, out of this world presentation. Later this week, we’ll also visit Slide Ranch and meet their resident goat.
Ceramics
July 26-30 Grades 6-8
When the Spanish colonists arrived in San Francisco to establish El Presidio and nearby Mission Dolores, they brought their beliefs, traditions and material culture with them. Archaeologists working at the Presidio have excavated sites in the park and have discovered artifacts belonging to the Spanish settlers. Come spend a week with the Presidio Archaeology Lab exploring the different types of ceramics that the Spanish brought with them to San Francisco. Campers will work with a historic ceramic artist to make a variety of vessels using traditional manufacturing techniques and different decorative styles. The camp will culminate with a visit to the Presidio Archaeology Lab where campers will have the opportunity to analyze and catalog real ceramic artifacts from the lab’s collection.
Circus Arts

Learn all about what is involved with being in a circus! Everyday, campers will learn all about circus arts from talented AcroSports instructors. Circus Arts incorporates the many performing art forms used in circus. Campers will receive training in a broad range of circus skills including: tumbling, hand balancing, partner acrobatics, clowning, choreography of theatrics, act development, skits and group routines, falls, flips, rolls, juggling and equilibristics (balancing apparatus). Join us as we develop our creative expression. The goal of this week is to make each camper feel successful and confident regardless of skill level. This is achieved by breaking down each new skill into small, achievable steps appropriate for the student’s mental, physical and emotional development. Campers will build strength, flexibility and agility while improving their coordination and body control. They will also develop self-confidence, creativity and independence. A fun and exciting show will be put on by the campers at the end of the week.
Counselor in Training Instruction

Learn what it takes to be the world’s best camp counselor. The Counselor In Training (CIT) series is designed for entering 9th and10th graders who would like to experience working with youth in a day camp setting. CITs will learn about youth development, leading group games, safety and supervision. Learn how to respond in an emergency situation as we complete CPR/AED and First Aid courses. Come participate in an exciting ropes course with fellow CITs and see what it means to become part of a strong team. The goal of this program is for CITs to build their self-confidence, develop the skills necessary to be leaders and experience the rewarding role of being a professional role model.

With the support of their CIT coordinator and other counselors, CITs will have hands-on experience working with youth. During Earth Service Corps camp, we will go on outdoor adventures like hiking, sailing, ropes courses and so much more. Campers will explore environmental topics in order to learn more about the world around them through exciting adventures and stewardship projects. We’ll learn about the natural environment and habitats around us in the bay area as well as the importance of conserving our natural resources. Campers will take part in daily service-learning projects which will be incorporated into outdoor adventures. We’ll explore the Presidio National Park & discover the plants and animals that live here as well as other parts of the Bay Area. Campers will build their confidence through leadership development activities, team building and cross cultural awareness all the while becoming responsible environmental stewards. Please join us for some outdoor adventure and stewardship activities this summer.
Engineering FUNdamentals

Design and build motorized machines, catapults, pyramids, demolition derby cars, truss and suspension bridges, buildings and other constructions using LEGOS®. Explore concepts in physics, mechanical engineering, structural engineering and architecture while playing with your favorite creations. Use over 100,000 LEGOS® to take on real-life engineering challenges. Designed by engineers, the curriculum challenges both new and returning students to reach the next level of engineering comprehension all while having fun. Campers will have the chance to build what they have only dreamed of with the support of an experienced PlayWell engineering instructor. This is a hands-on and minds-on class suitable for LEGO® building system novices to “maniacs.” Returning students will have the opportunity to work on new projects and challenges.
Experimental Archaeology

Did you know that native Ohlone and Spanish colonists once lived at the Presidio? Archaeologists have excavated sites in the park and have discovered artifacts belonging to these people. By studying the artifacts that were made and used by people in the past, archaeologists have been able to uncover forgotten stories and learn more about the Presidio’s history. Come spend the week with the Presidio Archaeology Lab and explore what life might have been like for the Native Ohlone and the Spanish colonists. Campers will examine artifacts and will experiment with making things from the Ohlone and Spanish cultures. Activities include cooking tortillas, making adobe, painting pottery, playing games, singing music and more.

GirlForce Camp is for girls only. We’ll explore what it means to have fun, be healthy and make choices that help you be the most powerful girl you can be! Come learn fun ways to be physically active, delicious ways to have healthy nutrition and find creative ways to feel good about yourself and make healthy choices. We will play games, go on field trips, create art work, cook and play sports. There is something for every girl in this camp. Have fun and learn in GirlForce.

Join us for an exciting week of designing and building machines powered by alternative energy sources. Instructors from PlayWell Technologies will teach campers using LEGO® building systems. We’ll race solar cars, build a wind-powered electrical generation facility and use water and gravity as an energy source. Jump, climb, roll and play. Every day, campers will learn the essentials of movement, flexibility and balance at San Francisco Gymnastics. Gymnastics is a wonderful medium for kids to explore and build on their physical, mental and emotional capabilities. It is a sport that presents challenges in new and exciting formats that is pure fun for kids. The developmental skills gained through gymnastics lay the foundation for future use in many other sports. In addition, the personal lessons learned through goal setting, perseverance and self reflection are useful for a lifetime of adventures. Each day campers will participate in age appropriate activity rotations including: beam, floor, vault, bars, rings, trampoline, obstacle courses and other games and activities. Campers must wear clothes that stretch and allow movement.
Mad Science

E=ymca2! Join us for an exciting week of fun science experiments, field trips and explorations. Campers will visit the Exploratorium’s many exhibits including Traits of Life, where they’ll learn about DNA, evolution and the cycle of life. At Destination Universe at the Chabot Space and Science Center, campers will discover how stars are born and what happens when galaxies collide. We’ll also take a trip to the Academy of Sciences where we’ll experience what its like to walk in a rainforest. At the Lawrence Hall of Science, campers will get to test their own rocket, walk in simulated martian gravity and get dizzy in a spinning chair. Come conduct crazy and wacky experiments here at camp throughout the week.
Outdoor Adventure

This camp is designed for the adventurous. Join us for an action-packed week. We’ll have an amazing time indoor rock climbing at Mission Cliffs. Test your limits as we go hiking in the Presidio National Park on some beautiful trails. We will taste native blackberries as we head to Inspiration Point along the Ecology Trail. Trips for Kids will lead us on an incredible mountain bike ride in the Marin Headlands. Plan to get wet as we kayak down Richardson Bay in Sausalito. We’ll spot sea lions and leopard seals with a SeaTrek instructor. Finally, campers will have the chance to participate in a ropes course at Fort Miley where they’ll develop team building skills with their fellow campers. Campers must pass a swim test, showing their ability to swim 100 yards and tread for two minutes without difficulty by June 1st. Every day, campers will travel to the YMCA Point Bonita, situated between coastal beaches and the wind-swept hillsides of the beautiful Marin Headlands where land, sky and sea meet. Here, campers will learn from naturalists of the YMCA Point Bonita. Campers will explore local tide pools and beaches, the historic Point Bonita Lighthouse, the Marine Mammal Center, a freshwater lagoon and remnants of several other coastal defense systems. A visit to the Marin Headlands Visitor’s Center will allow us to delve deeper into the history of this area including the Miwok people, Vaqueros, Portuguese dairy ranchers, the US Military, lighthouse keepers, and the national park. Our on site organic demonstration garden will help us use all of our senses to learn about edible and medicinal plants, composting and worm bins and food production. Using experiential and cooperative learning techniques, we strive to send campers home as ambassadors of the environment and stewards of their homes and communities.
PRE-ENGINEERING
June 21-25 Grades K-1
Create, play and learn. Design a town, city or star base with houses, buildings, pyramids, bridges, tunnels and towers. Every day, campers will learn from instructors from PlayWell Technologies who will teach campers how to build cars, trains, buses and trucks. Race them, crash them and repair them. Explore the many possibilities of LEGO® building systems while learning valuable construction techniques.

Calling all adventurers. Join us for a week of exploration and hiking through the Presidio National Park. Campers will learn about the hidden treasures of this area and will discover its beautiful beaches including Marshall’s Beach, Crissy Field and Baker Beach. We’ll hike along a vast number of trails such as Batteries to Bluffs, California Costal Trail and the Ecology Trail. Come learn about the Presidio’s amazing history and the plants and animals that live here. Campers will have the unique opportunity of participating in a restoration project to help protect native plants of the Presidio. Everyday, campers should wear comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots.
SAILING

Everyday, campers will receive instruction from a US Sailing certified instructor of the San Francisco State Community Youth Sailing program. Come learn basic sailing principals including sail trim, tacking and jibing, safety, sailing knots and environmental protection. This week, campers will have the opportunity to benefit from sailing and its life lessons in a safe and well-supervised environment. Camp will focus on promoting self-confidence, independence, strategic thinking, teamwork and respect for the environment. Campers must pass a swim test, showing their ability to swim 100 yards and tread for two minutes without difficulty by June 1st. Seriously Fun Theater Camp leads creative kids through the process of creating, practicing and performing their very own play that we believe will change the world. Glitter & Razz Productions will bring out the creative side of campers as they work as a team. Each week explores a different theme that allows kids to be themselves, collaborate with others, and see the world in new ways. There will be a celebration where campers will share their work for their parents on Fridays.

Skateboarding

Get ready for an exciting week as we take trips to local Bay Area skate parks. Skateboarding is a wonderful activity that improves flexibility, coordination and cardiovascular stamina and also promotes individuality and creativity. Campers will build on existing skills and develop new techniques in a safe and structured environment. Join us as we try to ollie, the foundation for almost all flatland tricks. More advanced skaters will try to pop-shuvit and rail stand. The focus is on having fun, keeping active, building confidence and making new friends with similar interests. Beginners and more experienced riders alike are welcome. Campers should bring a skateboard and helmet to camp everyday.
Yoga & Art

Campers will have a chance to express their creative sides as they explore yoga and art this week. Learn yoga techniques from an experienced instructor. Campers will improve their flexibility and balance in a fun atmosphere. The goal of this week is to develop the spirit, mind and body of campers through this peaceful practice. Campers will enhance their love of learning and their appreciation and respect for themselves and others. Join us as we learn positions like crab, camel, dolphin, rabbit and lion. Then, join us for some incredible art projects and field trips. We’ll make fashion hats out of grocery bags and learn all about recycled creations from around the world with the Museum of Craft and Folk Art’s “Recycle, Reuse, Recreate” workshop. The Children’s Museum of Art will present their Color Mixing art lesson where campers will create a color collage-painting and engage in scientific process to predict, experiment and discuss what happens when two primary colors are mixed. Campers will make clay creations, origami and collages. Be ready to paint, draw and create.
Young Naturalist

Come learn about nature and explore the outdoors all week long. Through projects, activities and field trips, campers will heighten their awareness about nature and will build confidence as they become responsible environmental stewards. We’ll be introduced to environmental topics including renewable energy, sustainability, conservation, ecology and more through fun projects, hands-on activities and exciting field trips. Campers will learn not only more about themselves, but about the world around them. Make eco-art out of recycled and reusable art resources and explore with us the hidden treasures of the Presidio National Park. This week we’ll visit the Strybing Arboretum for their “Oak to Acorn” hands-on, Children’s Garden program. We’ll also make a trip to the Garden for the Environment to learn about organic gardening and composting. At The Garden’s at Heather Farms, campers will get a chance to be “nature detectives” as they follow clues like tracks and learn about the plants and animals that share our urban habitat.
Our sports camps are unique because we teach the fundamentals of each sport through a variety of fun drills and skill exercises. The majority* of our camps spend half of the day (roughly 3-4 hours) specializing in a particular sport for the week, with the remainder of the day spent exploring the Presidio National Park, playing group games and completing art & craft projects.
*An exception to this is our bike camps, which focus on a sport for the whole day.

Get ready to learn about America’s favorite past time. Join us as we learn the rules and history of baseball. Campers will learn the fundamentals of defense, offense, base running and hitting. Pop-ups, grounders and home runs will also be discussed. Tournaments and scrimmage games will compliment instruction. Campers will learn from talented staff who will promote a non-competitive environment that is conducive to learning. The focus of this week will be to make new friends, stay healthy and have fun.

Basketball camp is an exciting and confidence-building experience. Campers learn the basics of dribbling, ball handling and shooting. Our older campers will practice passing, defense, rebounding, shooting and team play. Activities include skills and drills, games and tournament play. Come see what its like to work as a team with new friends. Campers will increase their knowledge of basketball and will have the opportunity to develop new and existing skills in this dynamic sport.

Take to the road by bicycle in our one-week bicycle camps, led by the experienced and certified staff of the Presidio Community YMCA Bicycle Program (www.ybike.org). Campers will practice their skills at our skills area near the Presidio Community YMCA, learn safe street and group riding practices on the quiet roads of the Presidio National Park and then go for longer rides to parks throughout San Francisco and even across the Golden Gate Bridge to the Marin Headlands. Campers will also develop the skills to be responsible leaders, honest and positive members of a team and respectful stewards of the National Parks and natural places through which bikers ride. All equipment is provided. Campers who choose to bring their own bike and/or helmet must have their equipment inspected by YBike staff prior to using it for biking camp. Campers who have never ridden a bicycle before are welcome and will be taught to ride so that they can participate.

Looking to get muddy? Want to take your bike into the dirt? Offered in partnership with our dirt-friendly pals at San Francisco Urban Riders (www.sfurbanriders.org), our one-week Mountain Biking camp will teach you the skills you need to ride with confidence on the technical trails and paths of the San Francisco Bay Area. We’ll first hone our skills on the trails of the Presidio, move on to master the all-volunteer-built trails of Mt. Sutro and then take a trip to the Coastal Trail and dirt paths in the Marin Headlands. We’ll also tackle the trails of McLaren or Golden Gate Parks. We’ll cap off a great week by taking a field trip to the mountain biking mecca of Marin’s China Camp. All equipment is provided. Campers who choose to bring their own bike and/or helmet must have their equipment inspected by YBike staff prior to using it for bike camp. Campers must know how to ride a bicycle to enroll in this program.

Multi-Sport Camp is for campers with lots of energy and an eagerness to play and learn all of the traditional sports. Each day, campers will be introduced to a new sport including basketball, soccer, tennis and baseball. Rules, scoring and drills will be taught in each sport by our experienced instructors. Players of all levels and abilities are welcome. Campers will have the opportunity to play their favorite sports and discover new interests. Get out there, get active and have fun.

This week we’ll learn all about the game of soccer in a non-competitive atmosphere. Through drills, small-sided games and full matches, campers will develop their soccer and sports skills. Join us as we practice offensive techniques including kicking, passing and dribbling as well as defensive ones including defending and goal keeping. We’ll learn about the rules of the game in fun and exciting ways. Campers will improve their flexibility, coordination and stamina. Our experienced instructors will work to develop each camper regardless of his or her playing ability. The emphasis of soccer camp is keeping active, working with others and having fun.
T-Ball

This week our young campers will learn all about t-ball. Campers will get the chance to improve their batting by eliminated fear of being hit by a pitched ball. Join us as we practice our hitting, running, fielding and throwing skills. Campers will be taught all about the basic rules of the game and will have a blast playing outside with new friends.

Set! Game! Match! Everyday, campers will learn about the game of tennis from the Presidio YMCA tennis coaches. Campers will work on coordination, agility, stroke development, game fundamentals and tennis strategies in a fun environment. Beginning/intermediate players will practice swings, the proper grips for ground strokes and volleys and maintaining a consistent rally during games or recreational play. More advanced players will focus on how to serve and how to return and hit overheads. Beginning, intermediate and advanced players are welcome. Campers may bring their own rackets, or one will be provided for them.

Read below about last year's Winter Camp 2009:
The Presidio Community YMCA will run two, three day camp sessions this winter. Kindergarten to Eighth graders will have a chance to go on fun trips, hike in the Presidio National Park, and play group games in a fun and well supervised environment. During session 1, Dec. 21-23, campers will have a blast visiting the Exploratorium, the Zeum, and the Yerba Buena Ice Skating Rink. During session 2, Dec. 28-30, campers will get a chance to go rock climbing at Planet Granite, go bowling at Yerba Buena Bowl, and be an archaeologist at the Presidio Archaeology Lab.
Spring Break Camp
The Presidio Community YMCA will run a fun filled week of activities over Spring Break. Kindergarten to Eighth graders will have a chance to go on fun trips and play group games and sports in a fun and well supervised environment. Exciting field trips include visiting the Aquarium of the Bay, the Arboretum, the Randall Museum, Julius Khan Playground, and hiking along the Ecology Trail in the Presidio National Park.
GirlForce Spring Break Camp (7-12 years old)
Join us for spring break GirlForce Camp, a five-day, fun-filled camp for girls only. Campers learn about physical activity, nutrition, positive body image and smoking prevention in this week long girls' wellness program. Activities include games, field trips, art projects, sports and more. Please register in person at Main Post Gym by 10pm, Monday March 15th. A $50 nonrefundable/non-transferable deposit is required for each camp session. Full payment is due three weeks prior to the start date. Registration closes two weeks prior to the start of GirlForce camp.

Registration will be open to current Presidio Community YMCA Facility Members beginning Friday, January 29th, 2010. Program Members may enroll on Saturday, February 6th, 2010. Our secure web site for registration is: http://enroll.ymcasf.org. You can also register at the Main Post or the aquatics center, open Monday- Friday 5:30am-10:00pm and Saturday-Sunday 7:00am-7:00pm.
In order to utilize online registration you (the principal account holder) will need the following:
- A Program or Facility Membership that is current through the last day of the camp session for which you wish to register.
- Your YMCA member number.
- Your current email address that is on file with us.

Our staff are CPR/AED and First Aid certified and complete at least 30 hours of YMCA training including child abuse prevention, risk management, youth development and more. Prior to hiring, all staff undergo a thorough background check that includes four reference checks and fingerprinting through Live-Scan technology. All of our drivers are DMV and YMCA certified.

Parent Information Night
Come to Letterman Gym for Parent Information Night on Thursday, May 20th, 2010 at 7 PM to meet camp staff and have your camp questions answered.
Requirements
Discipline Policy
We expect all of our participants to adhere to the following rules:
- Do not harm anyone physically or emotionally.
- Show respect and listen to your counselors at all times.
- Be responsible for cleaning up after yourself.
Any time an incident occurs, we will progress along the following path. This order may be modified depending on the severity of an incident:
- A counselor will remind the child of YMCA rules.
- A counselor will remove the child from the group and sit with him/her so that he/she may cool down.
- A counselor will give and discuss with him/her a logical consequence for his/her action.
- A counselor will inform a parent of the behavior and seek additional suggestions on how to best work with his/her child.
- A meeting with the child, parent and camp director will be scheduled so that a contract of conduct can be signed.
- A parent must pick up his/her child after an incident from whatever site the group may be.
- The child will not be allowed to attend camp the next day.
- The child will not be allowed to return to camp.
Minimum Age Requirement
Youth must be at least five years old and entering kindergarten to participate in camp.
Swim Testing Requirement
Here at the Presidio Community YMCA Summer Camp, safety is our number one goal. We may require that your child complete a swim test while at camp in order to best determine his/her swimming ability. All campers registered for Movin’ On Session 5, Explorers Session 9, Outdoor Adventure and Sailing camps will be required to pass a swim test at our Letterman Pool facility by June 1st. What to Bring
What to Bring/ Wear
Everyday, campers should bring a lunch, a backpack, sunscreen and a swim suit. They should always be equipped with layers of warm clothing and athletic shoes. Please label all of your child’s belongings and check the lost and found as left items will be donated at the end of summer.
Do Not Bring
Please do not send your child to camp with money or electronics as we feel that these are distractions and limit the overall camp experience.
Medications
Please note any special medication (prescription or non) that your child needs on his/her Registration Form. Medication must be stored in your child’s backpack in its original container and with complete written instructions.

Sign In/Out Procedure
Every day your child must be signed in and out by an adult listed on your child’s registration form. In order to add an adult to your child’s authorization pick up list, a completed change of program form must be submitted. A participant age 12 and older will be permitted to sign himself/herself out as well as his/her siblings with the completion of a walking form (available at camp). A note from a parent/guardian is not sufficient. After 6 PM there will be a charge of $1 per minute/per child late fee.
Extended Care
Extended care is offered at no additional cost. During this time, campers will have structured activities in their designated grade level rooms.
Late arrivals & early Pick ups
Camp starts at 9:00am everyday. If your child’s group has left, please contact the Camp Director to find out if you can drop him/her off at the group’s location. We will not change a camper to a different group due to a late arrival. The main camp day is over at 4:30pm. Please complete an Early Pick Up Form (available at camp) to arrange early pick ups. We will do our best to accommodate early pick up requests. The Presidio Community YMCA is not responsible for missed appointments.
Absences
Please email the Camp Director Lara Rempel at lrempel@ymcasf.org with the date, child’s name, child’s camp, parent’s name and phone number. We do not give refunds or credits for missed days.

All field trips and site locations are subject to change.
Groups
Youth are grouped by the grade they will be entering in the fall of 2010. We will make no exceptions to this policy. If you register your child for the wrong grade level, his or her camp enrollment will be canceled. Within camps, each youth is assigned a counselor for his/her safety. Campers are assigned their counselor in alphabetical order. Group requests are not considered because the group as a whole will remain together for the majority of the day.

Payment
Presidio YMCA Membership Options
Presidio community YMCA Individual and Household Facility Members subscribe to a monthly Facility Membership and are eligible to pay the lower Facility Member rate for camp and receive priority registration. Those who would like to participate in camp but don’t have a Facility Membership can purchase a one year Program Membership for $50/individual or $75/family. Program Members pay the Program Member rate for Camp.
Financial Assistance
To the extent possible, financial assistance is available thanks to the generous donors who contribute to our Strong Communities Campaign. Financial Assistance forms are available online and at Main Post Gym and must be submitted in person. The deadline to apply is May 1st. Payment/ Cancellations
Participants with outstanding balances cannot register for future programs until the balance due is paid in full. Full payment for camp is due three weeks prior to the start of each session. Payment in full ensures your child’s camp placement. Cancellation/change of program forms will be available online as well as the Membership front desk. The form can be emailed to Madeline Kitagawa at mkitagawa@ymcasf.org or submitted in person. This form must be submitted two weeks prior to the session start date in order to receive a refund, less $50 deposit. Deposits are non-refundable/transferable. We also offer a summer camp bank draft option, please contact Madeline Kitagawa for more details.
Early Bird Special
Don’t miss the chance to save the summer! Register by Monday, March 1st and get $20 off each camp session (up to $200 per child for the summer).
Late Registration
Late registration/changes within one week of camp incur a $25 processing fee provided there is space available. This is included in the price of camp for that week.
