The YMCA introduces youth to nature.

Sherlock joined our Earth Service Corps program at Marina Middle School to fulfill a community service requirement. Having recently emigrated from China, he has struggled to learn English and adapt to a new lifestyle.

Through Earth Service Corps, Sherlock went hiking, mountain biking, kayaking and camping, all for the first time. He developed a passion for the outdoors through his participation in service projects in the Presidio. Sherlock built friendships, became engaged in his new community and is now a life-long steward of the environment. “During one project, Sherlock used a camera for the first time. He was so excited that he told me that day he wanted to be a photographer. For the rest of the school year, we let him take pictures on all of our trips and service projects.” – Sina, Earth Service Corps Coordinator

No one is turned away due to inability to pay.

Christine, age 6, comes to swim lessons every Saturday morning. She has a big smile on her face as she walks across the pool deck to meet her swim instructors and fellow classmates.

Christine’s parents both work seven days a week. They are not able to bring their daughter to the YMCA to watch her swim, nor can they afford the full cost of swim lessons. Still, Christine is learning to swim with joy and positive encouragement from her swim instructors. Through the support of financial assistance provided by the YMCA, Christine is learning life-long skills to keep her active and safe in the water. “Christine even learned the YMCA song herself and changed the words to, ‘It’s fun to PLAY at the YMCA!’ She sings it every time we come to the Y.” – Marsha, Christine’s mentor

The YMCA is resource for San Francisco Families- providing them with social connections and programs that make families stronger.

“If the Presidio Community YMCA did not exist, my family would not be who we are today.

The Y in particular has given us so much on so many levels. We have gained a network of friends who are a constant in our lives. Our children have grown up together. Without the YMCA, we would be without a sense of extended family and community – we would be without a place to go where other people gather and share the same values.” – Annette, YMCA member since 2000
