Clean it Up An Earth Service Corps Story

Earth Service Corps Story

January 16, 2012

On a clear, sunny Martin Luther King Jr. morning, while most kids were sleeping in on their day off, nine Earth Service Corps (ESC) students representing three middle schools gathered at Roosevelt Middle School at 8:30am, ready to embark on a day full of service and exploration.

MLK Jr. Day is also known as a national day of service, and a day that the Golden Gate National Park Conservancy (GGNPC) lines up various service projects for youth, adults and families throughout the Bay Area. ESC decided to do their part in giving back with an Ocean Beach Cleanup Day put on by the GGNPC. After hearing about the do’s and don’ts from the park ranger, the students grabbed their orange buckets, snapped on their work gloves, picked out a garbage picker upper, and in teams of three, headed for the sandy shores. An hour and a half later of Styrofoam pieces and plastic debris pick-up, the students thanked the Park Conservancy and headed into Golden Gate Park for lunch and the second part of the day’s adventure.

With Golden Gate Park’s tulip garden as their backdrop, students had a working lunch as they munched on their sandwiches and talked strategy for their impending hunt for the geocaches. Geocaching is a real-world outdoor treasure hunting game. Players try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using GPS-enabled devices and then share their experiences online. Equipped with an iPhone’s GPS system, students took turns locating the hidden containers by leading each other through trails around the park’s 2 historic windmills. Often, they were seen scrambling, climbing and running, until finally turning over a log and yelling out “POPCORN!” a signal they agreed on to mean that one of them had found the geocache. By 3:00pm, ESC left Golden Gate Park with four successful geocache finds. The chatter on the bus ride back to Roosevelt Middle Schools consisted of plans for exploring other nearby parks for more hidden treasures and possibly even creating Earth Service Corps’s own geocache to hide for the general public.

Timbuk2 Donation Inspires YBikers

Timbuk2 Donation Inspires Youth

Thanks to Timbuk2’s recycled bag program, the Presidio YMCA’s outreach YBike program has received over 30 youth-sized backpacks, hip-pouches and messenger bags. While these bags are already pre-used, they are so pristine; they might as well be new. The Timbuk2 bags came in a wide variety of styles and colors, so there’s something to appeal to all of the youth in the program.

These Timbuk2 bags have really transformed program days in YBike. On a normal bike ride, youth are now clamoring to be the designated Timbuk2 bag carrier.

“It's really fantastic that Timbuk2 has partnered with us to provide such awesome bags,” says Winston Parsons, Bike Operations Coordinator of the Presidio YMCA YBike.

“We've started out using the bags to hold program supplies when we go out on the yard or on a ride (chalk, mini cones, etc) and for serving as a back-up first aid kits. While this is a really practical function they've proved to be yet another incentive for the youth to attend our programs.”

Providing the program “sweeps” (youth who follow behind the bike riders with first aid supplies) with a backup first aid kit in the form of a kid-sized and stylish Timbuk2 bag has proven to be a great way kids to actually be eager about being a sweep (despite the fact that they're having to carry something). It'll also allow the kids to carry their own snacks when YBike goes off site.

“I've found in roughly a month that I now have the same number of requests for being ride leader as I do sweeps,” recalls Parsons.

At the end of this semester, YBike will be raffling off several of the Timbuk2 bags to kids in each bike club.

“Youth will earn raffle tickets every time they attend program, meaning we'll have yet another incentive supporting our mission of getting kids riding bikes for fun, health and transportation!” says Parsons.

If you have a Timbuk2 bag that you would like to recycle, earn a sweet discount on your next purchase. Keep them out of the landfills and on the backs of our young cyclists in training. Your trash is the YMCA’s treasure!

Get to Know DAXKO

Dear Presidio Community YMCA Member:

This fall, we will be upgrading our software system to best support our community programs and services in healthy living, youth development, and social responsibility. The new system, “DAXKO,” will allow you to create online profiles, update information online, register more easily in-person and online, and will provide increased security for your personal information. In order to prepare for this operational transition, and in an effort to streamline our policies (across all 14 branches of the YMCA of San Francisco), we will be making changes that may affect your membership. Please see below for an overview of policy changes within the YMCA of San Francisco. Our new DAXKO system will “go live” on October 25, 2011.

During this time, we’ll be sure to keep you posted with any updates. But to help make this transition as smooth as possible for you and your family, there are a few things you can do as well.

Before October 2nd, we suggest you:

Ensure we have your most current email and mailing address on file (this is critical in providing us a vehicle for important member updates and alerts)

Review the following policy changes

Contact us with any questions you have

We are looking forward to the enhanced functionality of this new system, and to the increased level of service it will allow us to provide to you. It is our sincerest hope that this transition is smooth and seamless for you as a member; however we appreciate your patience during the months of October and November as our staff members learn the new system. Please feel free to talk with us before, during, and after this transition if you have any questions or feedback.

Thanks for supporting the Presidio Community YMCA!

Sincerely,

Letterman Area Parking Update

New Paid Parking Zone

Gorgas Ave

As you probably know, paid parking machines are being installed in public lots throughout the Presidio. As a YMCA member, wanted to alert you to the fact that some new paid parking will go into effect along Gorgas Avenue, very near to the Presidio Y's Letterman Gym and Pool facilities. This is scheduled to begin (and be enforced) as of August 29, 2011.

This paid parking area will include Gorgas Avenue and the small lot on the northwest side of the Letterman Gym. The larger lot behind the Gorgas warehouses will remain free and available until the next phase of the Doyle Drive construction (date TBD, sometime in 2012). Please see map for reference to the new paid parking HERE.

We are happy to answer any questions you may have regarding the Gorgas parking areas.
REIs Fire Provides Equipment to our YMCA

Posted by Bethany H on the REI Blog: http://findout.rei.com/blog_detail/?contentid=4824925893765730877

A fire at REI's Eugene, Oregon, store last August left us with more than $1 million worth of slightly smoke-damaged clothing and gear. It was still in usable condition, but deemed unsellable.

What to do? We quickly began brainstorming how best to make use of the product and avoid sending it all to the landfill.

While REI has a history of working with nonprofit partners, this situation presented a unique challenge . We needed to identify an organization that could handle such a large amount of products—ranging from fleece jackets to bike helmets—that also needed to be cleaned before they were distributed.

Fortunately, REI connected with YMCA of the USA, which divided the product among more than 15 YMCAs in the greater Los Angeles and San Francisco areas. The donated merchandise will serve kids participating in a wide variety of programs this summer, from urban after-school activities to overnight camps.

Because of the contribution, Stephanie Lauth, senior program director at YMCA's Camp Whittle in the San Bernardino National Forest, will offer a new backpacking program to round out the camp's regular summer offerings. An avid hiker herself, Stephanie is excited to teach kids packing and hiking basics.

"We've never had a backpacking program here before. With this donation, we'll be able to give kids a real backpacking experience," she says. Campers will be outfitted with backpacks, tents, sleeping pads, stoves and other gear recovered from the Eugene store fire for a 2-day adventure on a nearby segment of the Pacific Crest Trail. Kids will check out the equipment, including clothing, and return it at the end of the week, so campers will benefit for many seasons to come.

"Many of the 3,000-plus kids who attend Camp Whittle each summer are low-income children sponsored by 'camperships,'" says Lorren Repton, sales and marketing director for Camping Services of the Los Angeles Metropolitan YMCA. "This donation will help us enable a better experience for those who come to camp and don't have the equipment they need."

In San Francisco, 14 YMCA branches serving 50,000 kids a year will also reap the benefits of the REI donation. One recipient is the YBike Program, which runs citywide bike and traffic safety programs in elementary schools and makes it possible for hundreds of kids to ride bikes for the first time. The YBike staff use 250 bikes in their programs, and they were overjoyed to receive bike parts and equipment such as pumps, gloves, helmets, locks, grips and fenders to distribute to students in need.

"We don't have a lot of resources to buy bike and safety equipment," says Ben Caldwell, YBike Program director. "This donation has been a terrific help to our organization and the youth we serve."

"Thankfully, this type of adversity—a store fire—isn't something the co-op experiences every day," shares David Jayo, REI's corporate giving program manager. "But we're grateful that we've been able to turn a very unfortunate circumstance into an opportunity to help get kids outside through YMCA's programs—this summer and for years to come."

News from the YMCA of the USA

The Y For Healthy Living

THE Y IS INARGUABLY A LEADING FORCE FOR HEALTHY LIVING. But we know that too often we're viewed as a place for "gym and swim." Now, that's changing. Using our collective voice, compelling messages and areas of focus, we're magnifying our potential to improve the nation's health and well-being.

This Saturday (April 16th, 2011), the Y celebrates the 20th anniversary of Healthy Kids Day™. With childhood obesity on the rise and financial burdens limiting opportunities that encourage physical activity for kids, our work has never been more important. To draw attention to this critical issue and the Y's response, we're using Healthy Kids Day as a platform to share findings with national media from our first nationwide survey examining the barriers to physical activity and healthier homes.

Each day, we're advancing our leadership as a national champion of healthy living. And recently the Y found a new advocate in Dr. Sanjay Gupta, whose endorsement mirrors the message of Healthy Kids Day. This matters. With our allies, we're helping families make choices that are critical to longer, healthier and happier lives.

Golf Tournament A Success

Golf Tournament A Success

The 4th Annual Golf Invitational raised $26,925

OCOTOBER 14th 2010, PRESIDIO GOLF COURSE- On a beautiful Thursday afternoon, fifteen golf foursomes embarked over the grassy knolls of the Presidio Golf Course in this year’s 4th Annual Golf Invitational to raise money for the Presidio Community YMCA.

Proceeds from this event support our Point of Inquiry field trip program. The money raised went to giving over 500 youth a meaningful field trip to the Presidio and Fort Point.

The perks of the day kept everyone in smiles. The concession cart wet pallets and the box lunches filled their bellies. The warm sun was perfect for weather conditions and the $20,000 hole in one competition added an extra glimmer in everyone’s eye.

On top of the fun everyone was having, a competition was underway and here were the people and teams that came out on top:

Closest to the Pin:

Ernesto E. (8’0)
Brett N. (7’4”)

Longest Drive:

A special thanks to everyone that donated their time and energy to making this year’s golf tournament a very successful event. And a special thanks goes to Kristen Dambrowski, the organizer, who managed to oversee this entire event while being 8 months pregnant. Congratulations to all our silent auction winners and we look forward to seeing you next year!

Family Biking Day

Family Biking Day promotes fun, safe riding

Remember that free and easy feeling as you glided down your neighborhood streets on your first bicycle - zipping past trees and houses with the wind as your companion? It was equal parts fun and independence.

On Sunday, you can find that magic at the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition's Family Biking Day, a free bike party at Golden Gate Park. Now in its fourth year, it's a fun-filled day of bike-related activities.

YMCAs Mentoring Program Builds a Better Future

YMCA's mentoring program builds a better future for at-risk youth

By Iris Rowlee
Published July 2010

It’s a Sunday afternoon at the YMCA, and sun streams in from the small, high windows onto the basketball court. The space is peaceful; the sound of a ball bouncing is punctuated only by the calm calling out of points. Two unlikely friends, Luke Sikora and Justin Edward Morrell, are playing basketball together. Sikora is a 26-year-old Marina resident with a job in finance. Morrell is a Hunter’s Point resident who will be going into the fifth grade this fall. Sikora and Morrell’s relationship was born out of a newly expanded YMCA program, Building Futures.

GOOAAAAALLL

Open Letter: "GOOAAAALLL!!"

Dear Board, Volunteers, Staff & Members-

I am so very happy to write you with the news that we have reached our Strong Communities Campaign goal of $235,000 for 2009-10! It’s been a long process, but thanks to all of your hard work we have done it yet again. I am extremely grateful to our staff for giving and getting just a little bit more this week. I am also thankful for several of our board members who also pitched in a bit more to help us reach goal over the past month.

I have had the pleasure of awarding several camp scholarships to families this week, and their overwhelming thanks is an example of how important this annual campaign is to our local community. Without these funds, thousands of youth and families would be without the support they need from the Y on a daily basis.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your efforts in helping us reach this goal. It’s truly been a team effort, and we all have a lot to be proud of. Please take time to celebrate in the gorgeous weather this weekend, or by watching soccer!

THANK YOU!

Kristen

Sign Up for Camp Article Tips for Parents

From time to time, I conduct interviews with camp directors to collect advice for parents looking for special experiences for their kids. I recently exchanged emails with Robert Sindelar of the Presidio YMCA in San Francisco. The Presidio YMCA has a huge number of camp options, covering any interest your child might have from sports, to Legos and drama.

With so many camps to choose from, any tips on how to pick the right camp for your kids?

Location is key. As a busy parent, you don’t want to spend hours driving your kids across the city, but you do want a setting that is conducive to a terrific summer experience. Our camp is located in a National Park, yet we’re still in the city. It’s great for kids to have as much outdoor exposure as possible during the summer months. Variety of activities is also important. Every kid is different, some like sports other like the arts. Make sure to pick a camp that they will enjoy attending, but that will also challenge them to try new things. Finally, if you’re a working parent, make sure the camp hours and/or the extended care hours meet your needs and budget.

What questions should parents ask a camp?
I would definitely ask about the staff training and always ask about the ratios of youth to staff. Many camps travel to locations throughout the city and you want to make sure your kids are properly supervised at all times. Ratios for younger kids should be much lower. Our YMCA offers 1 staff person for every 6 kids for youth in our K-1 programs. All staff are trained in CPR/1st Aid, Child Abuse Prevention, Risk Management, and emergency procedures. In addition, all camp field trips that involve swimming are accompanied by an aquatics specialist, even if the venue has on-site lifeguards...

Healthy Communities Week Review

Healthy Communities Week

Thank you to all who participated—members, staff and community! We served over 400 people throughout the week at our events.

Healthy Kids Day

Over 120 families attended Healthy Kids Day on April 17th. Our phenomenal bike staff fitted helmets, adjusted bikes and created a ‘mock’ road where cyclists had to obey the signs. Color My Soul sold organic t-shirts, Earth Service Corps kids helped out and ran games, kid yoga was taught by Eva, we offered hula hoop dancing, Eat Well Farms gave away eggs & organic baby food and the American Red Cross all ran tables. The most fun was had by the folks who participated in our scavenger hunt.

Lectures

Both lectures were well attended. The Institute for Health and Healing updated us on supplements---it was a lively conversation. It is evident that our members and community are informed and health conscious and I believe everyone learned something new! The following day, we hosted Loren Lopin who spoke about how to avoid being taken advantage of with financial investments. Along with website addresses and flyers, he showed a poignant video on the importance of knowing the credibility of your investment source.

FitFest

Saturday, April 24th was a gorgeous spring day and we hosted FitFest! Scott Anderson, our Group Exercise Director, planned a spectacular day for our members and community! A great time was had by all.

Hike

The week culminated in a hike to Olema, just outside of Point Reyes. Twenty-six participants led by Susie Ngarangad hiked a total of 8.2 miles which culminated in an organic picnic lunch. It was another spectacular day of waterfalls and vista views. We are already planning the next hike!

Thank you to all of the volunteers and staff who made this week possible! Passport to Wellness is our next event which will begin July 4th!

Best of Health!

FitFest Review

FIT FEST!

Saturday, April 24, 2010- The Presidio YMCA Group Exercise, Wellness and Aquatics Departments collaborated for an Open House event as a part of “Healthy Communities Week”.

A beautiful spring Saturday welcomed over 250 members and guests to participate in Group Exercise, Outdoor Fitness, Wellness Talks and Aqua Classes. Themed: “Sample, Discover or Refresh” your fitness, Saturday morning was filled with new class formats, wellness talks and outdoor cycling and walking opportunities to enjoy the Presidio. Sample classes included: Aqua Zumba, Bollywood Dancing, Body Pump, Body Jam, MVe Bootcamp, Nordic Walking and special Yoga & Pilates sessions.

Many Presidio YMCA members and guests provided comments and recommendations on adding these formats to future schedules at the Presidio YMCA. The Group Exercise Department is compiling these comments and emails for future scheduling, and hopes to use the Summer Schedule to test new class formats at various days and times.

Additionally Presidio YMCA Wellness Coaches and Personal Trainers provided informal talks on a variety of fitness subjects, or about programs at the Presidio YMCA and in the YMCA of San Francisco.

If you missed out on this fun Open House, the Presidio YMCA Group Exercise and Wellness Teams will be planning a fall event during our wonderful October weather. Look for additional opportunities to bring your friends and neighbors to explore the Presidio Park, and have a fun weekend at the Presidio YMCA!
