Making a Difference at the Peninsula Family YMCA

The Peninsula Family YMCA is an essential partner in San Mateo County, extending their services offerings throughout the county responding to any call for support and meeting the unmet needs of youth and families through long term intentional partnerships and collaborations with program quality excellence. It is a pleasure to work with the YMCA and its leadership. - San Mateo Police Chief Susan E. Manheimer, Heroes Breakfast 2009

Preventing Fatal Events

On the morning of August 24th, Shelly was sitting at her desk listening to her teacher begin class on what she thought would be a regular Monday when the power went out in her classroom. Minutes later a loud boom went off in the hallway. As her teacher locked the door and told her to get under her desk with the rest of her classmates, Shelly felt scared in not knowing what was going to happen next. She texted her mom and dad "I love you".

This incident at Hillsdale High School, where a former student set off 2 explosive devices and had eight pipe bombs strapped to his chest when he was tackled by a teacher, could have been a fatal event. Stephanie's (the School Safety Advocate at Hillsdale High) role is to work primarily with students who may be at risk of hurting themselves or others, are a target of harassment, bullying or violence, and/or have serious mental health issues. Immediately after this event Stephanie worked to assess and monitor students and teachers affected by the event. She, along with other mental health professionals, provided counseling to over 200 students and teachers in 3 days.

Living Strong Living Well

The Living Strong, Living Well program for cancer patiients and survivors improves energy levels, reduces the severity of therapy side effects, helps build muscle strength, flexibility and endurance.

"The trainers acknowledged our dedication. If we missed a class, they called us to see how we were doing, and asked how they could help. Some days I did not feel like I had the energy to attend class. The trainers encouraged us to push ourselves. Over the 12 weeks, our strength, flexibility and balance began to return. It was a miracle to watch the transformation of all in this YMCA program." Sylvia, LSLW Participant

D.E.W. Center Program (Day, Evening, Weekend)

This program works with high risk youth on probation, providing a safe and structured environment for adolescents to learn life skills, improve academics, acquire vocational skills, develop healthy relationships, access mental health services, and participate in recreational activities.

"When I was a young girl living with my mom, she abused and neglected me. Removed from my home, I lived with my dad until he became incarcerated. Living with my grandparents, I was failing school, withdrawn and quiet. I joined the Peninsula Family YMCA D.E.W. Center where the counseling, mentoring, tutoring and career training has helped me tremendously. I'm still trying to catch up academically, but hope to be the first in my immediate family to graduate from high school and be off of probation in December." Andrea. D.E.W. Center Participant
