Peninsula Family YMCA changes lives with the Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program.

Four years ago, Elaine Yarranton, Aquatics Director for the Peninsula Family YMCA (PFY), became a certified Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program Instructor. She launched the program at her facility with just one class and two students. Word quickly spread about the program's effectiveness, and Elaine's great teaching style. Today, PFY offers three classes, three times a week.

"Most people came just to see if the class could do anything for their pain. Many had difficulty walking and balance challenges. Now, they don't really need to hold on to the pool wall for stability. They can even bend down and pick things up and get in and out of chairs and cars more easily," say Elaine.

Elaine is incredibly passionate about the Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program because she has seen it transform people's lives. One participant used to come in moving very slowly, leaning heavily on her four-pronged walker. In just one to two months, she hardly needed to rely on it anymore.

"It just makes them feel better. They're in less pain. The're more flexible. They have greater range-of-motion, stamina and energy which allows them to be more active. Many have improved their balance and lost weight, but most of all, their outlooks are better," says Elaine.

Most of Elaine's participants have been praised by their physicians. "The doctors ask them what the've been doing and tell them 'whatever it is, keep doing it because it's working really well!"

So, can anyone do this program? "Yes, definitely. You don't need to be fit to start because everyone can do a few repetitions. Even just getting in and standing there is a great first step. Slowly but surely, this class will help you change your life," says Elaine.
