COMMUNITY CONVENER
 

This a program of San Francisco’s Department of Children, Youth & Their Families (DCYF) to improve the coordination and efficiency of services and organizations supporting families within individual communities. DCYF has selected the Mission YMCA to work with the Excelsior, Noe Valley, Glen Park, and Diamond Heights neighborhoods to improve access to our existing community resources. Some of our convener services include a Community Resource Guide (translated into Spanish and Chinese), a Back to School Resource Fair, collaboration on community events, and monthly convener group meetings that are open to the public. EXCELSIOR SPORTS CLUB
- Building the Excelsior Community through the power of sports -

The Excelsior Sports Club is a collaborative network of outstanding agencies working together to support and promote the health of the Excelsior youth through sports and physical activities. We are a partnership of community sports providers and neighborhood facilities that broker existing resources, advocate for neighborhood needs and provide increased access to sports opportunities within the community.

 

Our Vision:
A neighborhood where youth sports are thriving and parents, youth and community members are working together to support one another. Youth are healthy, confident leaders within the community.

Our Mission:
To promote the healthy development of youth through sports experiences

Our Goals:

  • Be a source of information & support for the Excelsior community regarding youth sports
  • Strengthen the quality of sports programs offered in the community
  • Identify community needs in order to create new sports programs

ExCEL AFTER SCHOOL LEARNING PROGRAM

(Expanded Collaboratives for Excellence in Learning)

 

The Mission YMCA and the San Francisco Unified School District collaborate to offer structured time after school for school-age children to receive a range of services that includes tutorial help, enrichment activities and recreation.

 

The program has 5 goals:

  • Improve literacy and math skills among African Americans, Latinos and English Language Learner students at risk of academic failure
  • Reduce isolation and improve coordination of program/services
  • Expand after school, weekend and summer enrichment opportunities for youth at risk of gang involvement and substance abuse
  • Expand access to and utilization of technology and telecommunications among youth and adults
  • Expand access to parenting education that supports positive youth and adult development

We offer this program at no cost to the parent for students who qualify attending the following schools:

EXCELSIOR YOUTH CENTER

The Excelsior Youth Center is now open Saturdays and some Sundays through a unique collaboration between the Boys and Girls Club of San Francisco and the YMCA of San Francisco. This partnership is supported by the generosity of the Department of Children Youth and their Families and the City of San Francisco. Weekend programming includes cooking, basketball, sports, arts and crafts, boxing, and other great opportunities for our children and teens on the weekend.

PORTOLA PALEGA PARK COLLABORATIVE - REC CONNECT

PRESCHOOL FOR ALL - FREE PRESCHOOL FOR 4 YEAR OLDS

First Five San Francisco in partnership with Wu Yee Children's Services has selected the Mission YMCA as a Preschool For All site. Preschool For All will ultimately provide universal access to high-quality, free part-day preschool programs to all San Francisco four-year-olds by 2009.
