Swim Lessons
The first YMCA swimming pool was built over 100 years ago. Since then, the YMCA has taught people of all ages how to swim. The Marin YMCA uses the National YMCA guidelines for swim lessons, which stress water safety, sports and games, personal growth, rescue, and stroke development.
Participants are grouped into Parent/Child, Preschool, Youth, and Adult lessons. Class times are available in the morning, afternoon, evening, and Saturday sessions for your convenience. Private lessons are also available.
Aqua Aerobics
High energy, low impact aerobics in the water. Easy on your joints, and a great workout for your muscles. Includes a warm-up, 25-30 minutes of cardio work, 5-10 minutes of strengthening and abdominal work. The class can be modified for a beginner or a seasoned athlete and is a great change for land-aerobics lovers.
Water Strengthening
Designed to strengthen and tone all body parts by using water as resistance. The class is low impact and taught at low to medium intensity. Class uses noodles, weights or steps for variety and to add more fun!

YMCA Lifeguard Certification
The YMCA of the USA offers a 40-hour nationally recognized lifeguard certification course. Prerequisites: Lifeguard candidates must complete a 500-yard swim test including 100 yards of each stroke: front crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke, sidestroke kick with one arm forward, and inverted breastroke with no arms. Individuals must be able to perform a head first surface dive, a feet first surface dive, a 15-foot underwater swim, and tread water with legs only for 2 minutes.
CPR/AED and First Aid certification is included in the course. First Aid Title 22 and oxygen administration are also required by the employer. Ages 16+. Jr. Lifeguard classes are offered during the summer. Call Elizabeth Cook at 415-446-2115 for more information.
Water Exercise Classes
Keep Fit
An instructional program for members of all ages who have special needs or limitations due to illness or injury, yet are independent. This class is designed to work the entire body through strengthening exercises and cardiovascular work to enhance health and fitness abilities. Class also works on balance and coordination.
Basic Arthritis Aquatics
This water exercise program emphasizes range of motion and flexibility for members who experience joint and muscle related problems. Developed in collaboration with the Arthritis Foundation. Instructors are certified by the Arthritis Foundation.
Arthritis Plus
Class is similar to the Basic Arthritis class but includes additional endurance and strength components. The Marin YMCA recommends one month consecutive participation in the Basic Arthritis Aquatics class prior to joining Arthritis Plus.
Special Needs Aquatic Fitness Program
Do you have back pain? Do you have an old injury that still gives you problems? Do you have arthritis and feel stiff or have limited mobility? Water may be the answer. Water can be utilized to help all levels of fitness. Due to the buoyancy and support properties of water, healing and range of motion are easily achieved with little effort. Due to the resistive properties of water, high intensity and aggressive workouts can be designed for
stronger individuals with injuries. This program enables members of all ages with special needs or limitations due to illness or injury to exercise at their level of ability with a personal instructor. We offer friendly, safe and accessible exercise enrollment that encourages independence. Program is by scheduled appointments only. For more information or to sign up, call Clara Gray at 415-446-2105.
