The Y is embedded in the communities that have been among the hardest hit by unemployment and inequality. The issue of unemployment and underemployment is complex, and our response is equally multifaceted. We believe self-sufficiency is critical to health and well-being.
A Brighter Future
It is so important for teens and adults to learn the skills that they can apply through life- building resumes, gaining experience and focusing on goals. The Y provides programs and opportunities for youth and adults to achieve economic self-sufficiency, living-wage employment, and prosperity. We address the needs of the community through targeted workforce development strategies including skills building, job readiness training, and job placements.
Our workforce development services reach 1,000 individuals each year and helps them to prepare, retain, and succeed within living wage employment opportunities.
Service Connection
We employ case managers and job counselors who work with clients to identify and ultimately remove any barriers which may exist them obtaining living-wage employment (such as GEDs, Certifications and Credentials, and Driver’s Licenses.) Our community has let us know that these services are critical to real, lasting change.
Pathways to Leadership
We recruit and support cohorts of teens, 14 – 18 year olds, who participate in a vetted workforce development curriculum where they learn the skills and habits to carry their futures forward. Professional practice in culinary arts and other areas of expertise develop hard and soft job skills, so that they can apply for summer internships and full-time jobs at partnering businesses!
Mayor’s Youth Employment and Education Program (MYEEP)
In partnership with the City of San Francisco, the Y’s multiple locations throughout the city are approved to be job sites for high school students who are participating in the Mayor’s Youth Employment and Education Program during the summer. Teen interns are coached and trained, an invaluable experience for learning new skills.
Transitional Aged Youth (TAY) Workforce Development
Working in partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development and others, the Y supports Transitional Aged Youth (ages 16 – 24) who are need of linkages to local employers. We provide transitional aged youth clients with job development workshops, support in barrier removal such as gaining a drivers license or building a resume, educational opportunities, and more.
Mental Health Internship Program
The Y recruits and stipends Marriage and Family Therapist Interns from local colleges who are placed in school sites in San Mateo and San Francisco Counties to provide mental health counseling to students and their families.
