After assessing your needs, your personal trainer will coach you through motivating and effective exercise sessions. Focuses include: improved muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular conditioning, lower back and core strengthening, body fat reduction and weight loss, improved coordination and balance, back pain prevention, and flexibility training.

Personal Trainer
Ernie Batongmalaque: A U.C. Santa Barbara graduate, Ernie focuses on body composition change through exercise and nutrition. He works with athletic individuals and people looking to develop a well-rounded program and specializes in boxing, kick-boxing, plyometrics, and pre- & post-rehab. Ernie has a B.S. in Exercise Physiology and Philosophy, ACSM, CPR/AED, Apex Fitness and Gold’s Gym Nutritional Programmer.

Shannon Boughn:
 A Wyoming native, and graduate of the U.C. Santa Cruz, she helps clients focus on weight loss using nutrition, strength and endurance training. She leads our Triathlon Training Program, coaching those coming to the gym for the first time as well as competitive athletes who want to better their performance. Shannon leads boot camps in Golden Gate Park and believes results come from sticking to challenging and fun fitness programs. Shannon has a B.S. in Earth Sciences, ACE, CPR/AED.

Vicki Farrell: 
A Bay Area native, who graduated from San Francisco State University in Kinesiology, Vicki helps her clients attain a higher level of health and well-being. She is top competitor in many local road-running races, and also works with horses as a private riding instructor. Vicki has a B.S. in Human Movement Studies, ACSM, CPR/AED.

Rene Freedman: 
Born and raised in California with a brief eight-year stint in Hawaii, Rene has 25 years of experience in the fitness world. Although he grew up hating, and continues to loath running he has clearly identified a fitness niche focused on cross training and power lifting, or what he calls “old school lifting…moving heavy things.” Rene believes in functional training that includes all modalities possible and has recently begun leading Pilates and kettlebell workouts. What he loves about teaching is the possibility to “change someone’s quality of life.” Rene is a Certified Personal Trainer through ACE, and also holds AED/CPR and First Aid certifications.

Felix Gallego: 
A Madrid native, athlete, and martial arts practioner, Felix graduated from the SF School of Massage. His specialties include personal training, self-defense, sports conditioning, weighlifting, boot camp, and post-rehab training. He is a BJJ aficionado and his certifications include NETA/ACE, TRX Group Trainer, SCW spinning instructor, Aikikai Aikido Black Belt, rock climbing and CPR/AED.

Gerard Navarro: Raised and schooled in Chicageo and in New York City, Gerard is active at several sports-related nonprofits: NY Road Runners, Manhattan Island Foundation, NYC Triathlon Club, SF Bicycle Coalition, SF Front Runners, and the Dolphin Club. Gerard's focus is functional total body training for increased core strength and higher energy and focus throughout the day. Gerard's varied, fun approach to training sessions incorporates basic yoga, cardio boxing and bootcamp calisthenics. Gerard has an M.S. and NASM and is CPR/AED certified.

Rick Orbeta: 
Rick holds a BA in Exercise and Sports Science from the University of San Francisco. He emphasizes balanced nutrition, flexibility, having a strong core, strength for power, injury prevention, and rest for proper recovery. Rick has a B.A. in Exercise & Sports Science.

Bob Darling, a San Francisco native and graduate of Chico State University, has been a fitness trainer for more than 30 years, helping everyone from beginners to international competitors and Olympic-caliber athletes. His expertise is long-distance running and he has coached at the international level. He has a wealth of fitness knowledge that he uses to motivate you and help you set realistic goals for a great fitness program.  Bob has a B.A. in Physical Education, NSCA, CPR/AED

Let our skilled wellness coaches help you find your way around our gym: they will talk to you about your current health practices, assess your fitness levels and set you up with a personalized fitness plan using our online FitLinxx system. Armed with this plan, our wellness coach can act as your personal athletic coach for health and wellness goals and lifestyle coaches for behavioral goals.

Cost is free, so schedule a free consultation at the Member Services Desk 415/957-9622.

A $10 fee will be charged for no-show appointments.

Thomas McGee: An Embarcadero YMCA member since 1998, Thomas started as a volunteer in 2007 when he completed Healthy Lifestyle Principles, along with CPR, AED and First Aid Certification. He completed Foundations of Strength & Conditioning in 2009, and in 2011 completed Foundations of Group Exercise Instructor Certification. Thomas is currently preparing for his ACE Personnel Training Certification.

 

Brian MeyerBrian Meyer: Growing up in Gary, Indiana, Brian had sports in his blood from the get go and became a 49ers fan at the age of seven. Whether it was whiffle ball, home-run derby, collegiate swimming, Army softball or trying out for independent professional baseball leagues, Brian has a true passion for sports. He graduated from Indiana State University with a BS in Mathematics and a Coaching Endorsement. Brian started working for the Embarcadero YMCA as a lifeguard in 2000 and has since transitioned into wellness coaching, attaining his Foundations of Strength and Conditioning Certification. In addition to knowing his sports lore, Brian believes that good character and kindness are important above all else.

 

Ron MichelsonRon Michelson: An Oregon transplant, Ron came to to San Francisco 15 years ago. He understands that integrating lifestyle changes is a journey, walking the road of self-refinement himself; this evolving practice shapes his insight for supporting advancement of others’ goals. Ron trains to compete as a natural bodybuilder, is studying training methods and philosophies at a local training gym and plans to attain his degree in sports nutrition. Ron is a Certified Personal Trainer with the NSCA and is pursuing a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certificate, also with the NSCA. He is First Aid and AED/CPR certified.

 

Dylan MartinDylan Martin: Dylan is a Bay Area native who grew up with the Y as a kid and is proud to have found the Y again as an adult. He reflects Y core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility through his passion for fitness and community. Dylan is grateful for the opportunity to help each member of the community improve their quality of life through his service as a Wellness Coach, Zumba and group exercise instructor, and as a member services representative.

 

Judie WeberJudie Weber: A native of Denver, Colorado, Judie took part in all athletic endeavors; ice skating, hiking, both snow and water skiing as well as track and field. She brought her athleticism to San Francisco more years ago than she cares to remember. Judie challenges herself with half-marathons, the Bay to Breakers and Team In Training walking events that raise money for the Luekemia & Lymphoma Society. She has volunteered at the Member Services Desk and on the Fitness Floor. She became a staff member on the Fitness Floor last spring. Her focus is helping members, especially older members, realize their athletic potential and abilities.
