Offers the children of formerly homeless families free year-round enrichment. Program participants are residents of a permanent supportive housing complex. Working collaboratively with a number of social service agencies, the Embarcadero YMCA provides much-needed academic and recreational activities for children in grades K- 5. For many children, Y staff are their first consistent adult caregivers.
The Orrick Year-Round Enrichment Program at Bessie Carmichael Elementary School
This program has been improving the lives of South-of-Market children and families since 1995
Each day, 125 children, grades K-5, participate in educational, cultural and recreational activities. Students are referred by the school due to academic, emotional or behavioral issues. The program aims to improve students’ grades in math and language arts; raise their understanding of healthy behaviors; increase their ability to work collaboratively with peers and adults; and step up the capacity for leadership.

Located at Bessie Carmichael Elementary School, on 7th Street at Folsom, more than 85% of the students live below the poverty level and a majority come from homes where English is a second language. Participants benefit from one-on-one volunteer tutoring and homework help that improves test scores, reduces behavioral challenges in the classroom and at home and results in higher self-esteem.
