After School Programs
The Orrick Year-Round Enrichment Program at Bessie Carmichael Elementary School
This program has been improving the lives of South-of-Market children and families since 1995
Each day, 125 children, grades K-5, participate in educational, cultural and recreational activities. Students are referred by the school due to academic, emotional or behavioral issues. The program aims to improve students’ grades in math and language arts; raise their understanding of healthy behaviors; increase their ability to work collaboratively with peers and adults; and step up the capacity for leadership.

For ten years, this program has offered a safe haven after school for children who attend the only public elementary school in the South-of-Market area. Every day 130 children find academic enrichment, consistent adult caregivers, supportive counseling services and fun and recreation right on site at their own school. Of those students, 85% live below the poverty line and a majority come from homes where there is limited English proficiency. The program is free of charge but relies on the generosity of corporate and individual supporters plus city and school district funding.

Rich Sorro Commons
Giving to the Y helps the next generation of Americans succeed with after-school enrichment. For children whose parents do not speak English as a native language, homework help plays a crucial role in improving grades and test scores. Working parents surveyed at this site identified safe, low-cost-childcare as the community’s top priority. Through a partnership between the YMCA and the Mission Housing Development Corporation, adult caregivers provide homework help and fun enrichment activities to children who live in this new low-income housing development in China Basin.
