Group Swim Lessons
The YMCA offers group swim lessons for all ability levels, from beginner to advance. These lessons are designed to help you develop your swimming skills and improve your stroke techniques in a supportive, fun environment. Enrollment is limited to six students per instructor to ensure individualized instruction through small student-to-instructor ratio.

Class Length:
Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday classes consist of 6 classes per session, 60 minutes per class. Saturday classes consist of 8 classes per session, 40 minutes per class.

Level
I: Beginner - An Introduction to Swimming
Introduction to swimming is for adults who have discomfort, or even fear of the water, but also have a strong willingness to learn. The class covers the most basic principles of moving through water. Safety is prioritized in helping adults develop breathing rhythms and rudimentary swimming techniques for aquatic fitness and recreation. Class Objectives: by the end of this level students should be able to swim 15 meters in a modified or safety stroke and be able to float on their front and back.

Level
II: Beginner - Fundamentals
This class is for people who have had very limited swimming
experience. Starting with a review of breathing skills and floating,
Level II continues to build on the skills introduced in Level I. You
will progress to basic swimming skills, such as kicking with a board
on your front and back. You will also be introduced to basic freestyle
(front crawl) and elementary backstroke. No prerequisite, but if you
are fearful of being in the water, try Level I first. For those of
you who have not swum in years and are interested in making a second
attempt at learning how, this class offers a good review of the basics.

Level
III: Advanced Beginner
This class builds on basic swimming skills. Students
are introduced to rotary breathing (freestyle side breathing), backstroke
and breaststroke while continuing to work on improving freestyle stroke
technique. Prerequisite: Ability to do front/back float and front/back
flutter kick with board.

Level
IV: Stroke Refinement
An intermediate level class focused on freestyle, backstroke, and
breaststroke development, with an introduction to butterfly. Emphasis
is placed on increasing speed and endurance with an introduction to
swimming sets. A perfect stepping stone for people who are interested
in learning how to develop their own swim workouts. Prerequisite:
Participants must be able to swim 50 meters freestyle, backstroke,
and breaststroke to enroll.

Private
Swim Lessons
Private swim lessons are available upon request and can be scheduled one-on-one or on a semi-private basis with two, three or four students who sign up together. Times of lessons are dependent upon student/instructor availability but can usually be scheduled to fit your availability. All lessons are 30 minutes long. Please call the Aquatics Department at (415) 615-1305 to schedule your lesson.

Semi-Private Swim Lessons
Semi-private lessons are scheduled for two, three or four students
who sign up together. Time of lessons is dependent on student/instructor
availability and are 30 minutes long. To arrange a lesson or for more
information, contact the Aquatics Department at (415) 615-1305. Fees are
per student.

Day
Care and Corporate Group Lessons
Group lessons are available for day care providers or other groups
interested in establishing a swim program. Schedules are flexible
and a minimum enrollment is required. Contact the Aquatics Department

Masters
Swim Team
Included in your YMCA Membership!
We offer coached practices five days per week. Coaches provide speed and endurance training, motivation, drills, stroke technique, and fun workouts.Try out a practice and speak with one of our coaches. They will let you know whether or not they can accommodate your speed/ability in their group. For more information contact the Aquatics Department at (415) 615-1305.
Prerequisites:
- Know 3 out of 4 competitive strokes
- Swim 500 meters in <15 minutes
- Swim 6 x 100 meters on 3:00 intervals
(this means each 100 meters is completed within 2 minutes and 30 seconds, including your rest in between each of the six 100 meter sets)
- 10 x 25 meters on 45 second intervals
