YMCA Aquatics is about water safety, skill development and fun for everyone. Our programs are about more than just technique and skill; they are about creating positive experiences, developing self-esteem and building friendships that will last a lifetime.These programs are available to both Facility and Community Members although prices do vary.

Youth Swimming Levels
• Perch (6 months–3 yrs) - Our Baby and Me Programs are designed for infants and their parents.
• Pike (3-5 yrs) - Pike is designed for new swimmers. Children develop safe pool behavior, adjust to the water, and develop independent movement in the water.
• Eel (3-5 yrs) - This advanced, beginner level, is for children comfortable in the water and reinforces Pike skills. Children can swim independently by the end of this level.
• Ray (6-13 yrs) - Students swim on their front and back in a more streamlined position. Instruction emphasizes more advanced personal safety and rescue skills which includes treading water.
• Starfish (6-13 yrs) - Children learn the fundamentals of lap swimming as part of a team, and the basics of the four competitive strokes.
• Polliwog (6-13 yrs) - Students are acquainted with the pool environment, safety, flotation devices, and basic stroke and kicking skills.
• Guppy (6-13 yrs) - Students learn to integrate the basic stroke and kick movements into three basic strokes: front crawl (freestyle), breaststroke, and backstroke.
• Minnow (6-13 yrs) - Students refine the basic stroke skills and learn sidestroke, butterfly, and advanced personal safety and rescue skills.
• Flying Fish (6-13 yrs) - The Fish level emphasizes endurance swimming and techniques that focus on the competitive strokes: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and front crawl (freestyle) with turns.
Deadlines: Class enrollment does close approximately 15 days prior to the session start date or when we reach capacity.
Group Swim Lessons
Our small group lessons are 30 minutes long. We divide students up by both level and age. These classes are designed to teach the basics water safety and survival, water acclimation, swimming techniques, build confidence in the water, while creating a fun and nurturing environment learning to swim properly.

Ages: 6 months - 13 years
Session Dates: Lessons will be held on Saturdays and Sundays ONLY. Lessons will be on either Saturday or Sunday at the same time each week.

In the event you wish to cancel your scheduled private lesson, you must call your assigned instructor and inform them that you will not be attending. If you are unable to reach them, please call the Chinatown YMCA Welcome Center at 415.576.9622 with the student's name, time of lesson, and your instructors name so they can relay the message.

The Chinatown YMCA offers both private and semi-private lessons for those who want more personal attention during their swim instruction.
Private Swim Lessons
These sessions are held in a 1 to 1 ratio of instructor to student. These classes are also designed to teach the basics water safety and survival, water acclimation, swimming techniques, build confidence in the water, while creating a fun and nurturing environment learning to swim properly. These lessons additionally focus on refining the individual’s stroke technique in addition to helping them reach their swimming goals. Sessions can be purchased in 30, 45 or 60 minute sessions.
Starting January 2012, we will not longer be offering 60 minute private lessons or 1 session only purchases.

Semi-Private Lessons
These sessions are held in a 1 to 2 ratio of instructor to students. Students must be at the same skill level since these classes are also designed to teach the basics water safety and survival, water acclimation, swimming techniques, build confidence in the water, while creating a fun and nurturing environment learning to swim properly. These lessons additionally focus on refining the individual’s stroke technique in addition to helping them reach their swimming goals. Sessions can be purchased in 30, 45 or 60 minute sessions.
Ages: 3 years and up
Cost: The prices are based off of Private Lesson prices with an additional $25/participant/30 minute lesson, $35/participant/45 minute lesson or $45/participant/60 minute lesson.

Pool parties are a great way to have fun with friends and gain confidence in the water through games and learning swimming skills. Members of all ages are invited to host a Private Party here at the Chinatown YMCA. Rentals are hourly and include certified YMCA Lifeguard Staff.
