About the instructor…

Ms. Sarah Klise has taught painting and drawing classes in San Francisco's Chinatown for 25 years.

She also works as a professional illustrator, having illustrated 15 books for young people. Her Saturday classes have produced many talented artists who have won many awards over the years. Students have taken top honors in:

  • The National Junior Duck Stamp Competition
  • The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards
  • The San Francisco Youth Arts Festival
  • Growing Up Asian in America

Ms. Klise teaches in a traditional style, drawing large scenes while the beginner art student follows along at their tables.

She introduces children to a variety of medias; pen and ink, marker, pastel, watercolor. She also teaches students to use light and shadow to enhance their work. As the students progress, she has them work on various individual projects: using mixed media, like large paper cuts outs to painting with acrylic paint.

Ms. Klise was awarded the Golden Apple Teaching Award nationally recognizing her exceptional work from the Scholastic Art Awards committee. One teacher, nationally, is given this honor each year. The San Francisco Youth Arts Festival has also awarded her with special honors for her work young art students.
