Arts and Classes

Instruction is the first step towards inspiration.

Students and youth often find their true passions outside of the classroom, whether in art, music, writing, or some other creative field. That is why we strive to have a range of different activities for youth in our Teen and Junior programs. From our lyrics and beat-making class Y-Projects to our creative writing and art classes, there is a little something to encourage every passion our students might have.

In our Teen Program, we have our very popular Y-Projects, a series of daily classes involving beat making, song production, DJ skills and recording. Our Creative Writing class, held throughout the week, gives students an opportunity to find their voice on paper by writing pen pal letters with students in South Africa, writing song lyrics or poems for future music projects, or discovering an entirely new genre of writing to express themselves with. Art Class focuses on art familiar to youth in our neighborhood – mural and graffiti art that helps to define rather than deface the Tenderloin. Students also have the opportunity to visit galleries to explore more art, as well as to branch out into digital and video photography.
