Shih Yu-Lang Central FAQs
- What happened to the old building? The old building was sold to the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation. The building will be renovated keeping its historical integrity to accommodate hundreds of single residency occupancy units to house homeless and disabled people. For more information about this organization you can visit: www.tndc.org
- When is the new building going up? The new building will not be built for at least five years. The YMCA is a charitable organization meaning we will have to fundraise millions of dollars to build the new facility.
- What do I do in the meantime? In the mean time old memberships and Financial Aid has been extended and people with existing memberships have been given free access to other YMCA’s in the area. We also have a small interim site with a gym and group exercise classes at 387 Golden Gate Ave (Two blocks from the old building). In addition we do have a Senior Center and Youth Center at this location. We encourage you to come check us out and participate!
- Does your facility have a shower? Unfortunately, no. We have a list of places in the area that give free showers For new members who wish just to work out at our new site we have reduced the price of a membership to fit the amenities we provide.
- What is your relationship/partnership with Hastings? Currently we lease from UC Hastings the location of our Interim Site. Our hope for the future is to develop a long standing relationship with them to build the new building next door to our current site.

To learn more about volunteer opportunities, view our Volunteer page or call or visit your YMCA.
- Is the YMCA a charitable organization? The YMCA of San Francisco is a nonprofit organization recognized by the Internal Revenue Service with a 501(c)3 charitable designation. - Why should I give to the YMCA if I am not a member? Your support is still needed. Membership fees and donations are two different sources of income, both tied to our charitable mission. Income from program and membership fees and government sources cover the YMCA’s operating costs, program delivery, and membership services. It does not cover the cost of community programs for young people and adults or financial assistance for economically disadvantaged youth and families.
Donations to our annual Strong Communities Campaign go directly to support programs and scholarships that benefit young people, adults and families. Your donations support our efforts in the community to provide meaningful opportunities, positive experiences, and caring adult role models to help youth grow into responsible adults. Therefore, your support benefits every community member, regardless of their YMCA involvement.
- Is the YMCA affiliated with the YWCA? The YMCA and YWCA are not affiliated. Each is an independent nonprofit organization with a separate but strong mission. The YMCA’s primary focus is character-building programming that helps young people reach their fullest potential in environments that promote a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Our goal is to build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities.
